Myrmecophilas in a garden in Puerto Rico

A friend has a collection of Myrmecophilas. He lives close to the sea, where there is lots of wind and good humidity. The plants receive full sun during certain parts of the day, but not all day. As you see the plants thrive mounted.

    Dendrobium anosmum var. Delacourii

I brought this orchid decades ago, from a vendor in New York that said it was a yellow form of anosmum. It didn't turn out to be yellow, but it is something of a mystery. I have not been able to find any reference to this variety on the literature on Dendrobium anosmum. Searching the web...

I grow my Encyclia bractescens in the "burn zone" of the shade house

I grow Enc. bractescens close to the shade cloth at the top of the shade house in what I call "the burn zone" where light is most intense. The pseudobulbs develop protective pigmentation and bloom well.

    Myrmecophila exaltata

I know, I know, lumper taxonomists say it's just a form of tibicinis. I am waiting for a splitter taxonomist to make it a separate species again.

    Encyclia Sol de Esperanza

I brought this one at a hardware store. The color is pleasant but the lip is strongly recurved back. I prefer clones that have a flatter lip presentation. This was sold as alata, it appears to be a hybrid, Encyclia Sol de Esperanza. The strongly recurved lip and the petals wider at their...

My Encyclias grow better slightly raised over the potting material

My experience with Encyclias is that they grow better is potted so that the base of the oldest pseudobulb, the one that will produce the new growth is slightly higher than the level of the potting material. I have used bark, stones, and empty terracota pots, all seem to work as long as the media...

I often see orchids massively overpotted, some thrive in much smaller pots and baskets

Sad to say, the internet is awash with misinformation and accurate, vetted information is often drowned by a deluge of absurd hacks and bizzare advice. The fact that there is a group of orchid that has been specifically bred for the house plant market has made some people think that all kind of...
