    Lazy Update

Thanks. I am sure we will have a wonderful time.

    Lazy Update

Well due to the fact that I grow under lights and summer most plants out doors, there are only so many orchids that I can grow. Therefore I stick to smaller growing orchids for he most part. I have tried Rothchild types, I have tried Phrags but for my conditions, I grow mainly Brachypetalum...

The ‘dust’ you got out could have been dried salt.

    Lazy Update

I do not find that all Paphiopedilum grow slowly. For most plants that might be true but I have found over the last 6+ years, under lights, Brachypetalums seem to go against that notion. I feel that niveum, bellatulum, concolor and delenatii grow pretty well. They seem to respond well if their...

    Ghost orchids!!!

But how often did you flower lindenii? Growing it is one thing, flowering it might be another. My research seems to indicate that Dendrophylax funalis is the easiest of the group to grow, all of the others not so much. I walked, I should say 'waded" in hip waders in the swamps of the Big...

    Ghost orchids!!!

Well, there isn't much that I can say except good luck. If you took a walk in the Everglades where Dendrophylax lindenii makes it's home, you would quickly learn to be much more faithful with maintaining humidity. You mention 2 ghost orchids. I see Dendrophylax sallei, and you mention a hybrid...

    What is this plant?

Sorry, I do not have a piece to sell/trade at the moment. But the next time mine throws off a division, I'll put your name on the back of the tag. I am trying to grow mine for a culture award at the moment. Brassavolas love Michigan as opposed to Florida! SW Florida was just too hot!

    What is this plant?

I have grown B. acaulis. That is not acaulis. I am leaning towards parkinsonianum at around 98% certainty. I had the honor of judging a great Epidendrum parkinsonianum once at a Greater New York Orchid Show back in the 90’s. It came in on a huge piece of cork bark hung on a wooden easel. It was...

Leaving a thirsty phrag for a week

A week never really bothers me at all. 2-3 weeks is a different story. You water right before you leave and just trust all will be fine. Orchid growing is fun! You can’t let it keep you from enjoying life! They are only plants.

Light and color / leaf twist question

I do not see a problem with the leaves. To a large degree, Phrags. seldom feature perfectly flat leaves. At least for me, they don't. And just because you live where it is often humid outdoors, that does not transfer to an indoor environment. If you have air conditioning, that is how a room is...

    Help with Dendrobium

To me it looks like spider mite damage. I agree with DJ that a white piece of paper can be held underneath a leaf. Tap it and hopefully the mites will reveal themselves. Now, the Dendrobium group in general are best grown tightly packed into a pot. Their roots like to be pot bound. They hate...

    Wondering about pitted leaves

Well it is all up to you. Personally I would avoid selling plants looking like that if I was a vendor. You are not representing your business that way. By the same token, one or two plants showing minor pitting is one thing. It is hard to grow things perfectly! Check the Saint Augustine Orchid...

    Hello from Wa

"Orchiditis" speciosa is the disease. There is no known cure. How sad are we? We only seem to feel better if we buy more orchids. One orchid, two orchids, eight orchids, the more we buy, the better we seem to feel. I think that we are "self medicating" when we do. unfortunately the euphoria of a...

Can anyone speculate on what this may be caused by?

Could it possibly be viral in nature? The symptoms are in such straight lines running the way that the veins would be laid out within the leaf.

Best orchid show in Florida to find rare Phals and Paphs?

Hey Russ, if it helps you in any way, that’s wonderful!

Why are the new leaves of my big paph dangling

Look at this closely. It seems like a really healthy plant, loads and loads of leaves. Probably has good root growth. I would not worry about a few floppy leaves! I do not know if there is such a thing as “perfect growth for a slipper”, but yours seems close. I wouldn’t worry.

Best orchid show in Florida to find rare Phals and Paphs?

Some of the largest orchid gatherings in Florida were orchid events, not necessarily shows. My number one event when I lived there was the Redlands Orchid Festival held every May at the Homestead Fruit and Spice Park south of Miami. It is heavily advertised and promoted. Vendors come in not only...

My most prolific orchid, Ascda. Su-Fun Beauty

That is a very nice Ascocenda that you have there. Just so colorful. I just resist in my own mind at times to call these Vandas. It all changed when those dyslexic aardvarks started playing around with the DNA of orchids. This is a very floriferous hybrid That was first awarded in 1990. It has...

Nobody is criticizing you. That was not my intent. I was just trying to make your life simpler. That’s all. And I am not annoyed. #832
