Welcome from a former Doylestonian who worked in Exton. Now on a barrier island in NC.

Any ideas as to what this is?

If there is an issue with the solutions applied, it's likely not related to the pH per se, but to the acidity or basicity, which can have a long-term effect on rhizosphere pH, not an immediate one.

Paphiopedilum Ruby Charm (and photography questions)

Bright, diffuse light is important. I made myself a “studio box” a while back, attaching white bedsheet to canvas stretcher frames, one yo each side and from above, with black velvet well behind the subject, then lit them from the outside with LED spotlights.

Any ideas as to what this is?

I imagine it depends upon the specific fertilizer, but when the original MSU RO formula (13.2-3-15-8Ca-2Mg) was released, I used it in RO water at 92.5 mg/L for a 125 ppm N solution, and I saw that same, low pH level, and that freaked me out. At that time, I used KOH to bring it back up to...

    Well-named!

Any ideas as to what this is?

Much to my surprise, it apparently doesn’t dissociate, but stays as a hydrolyzed urea molecule, suggesting no loss of ammonia or nitrogen.

And if you let the water evaporate urea will be deposited, and that's certainly a salt. Many moons ago, when a Genessee NY salt mine flooded, we had to use urea to deice driveways.

Any ideas as to what this is?

My understanding is that urea dissolved in water forms carbon dioxide and ammonium hydroxide, both of which are pretty stable up to pretty high concentrations, and should not give us the "urine smell" unless exposed to urease, an enzyme. I soppose some of the ammonia may leave the solution, but...

Any ideas as to what this is?

The first part is correct, it I doubt that second one is. Some, probably most nutrients are taken up at rates controlled by concentration - if there is a lot present in the rhizosphere, there will be a lot absorbed. Some of that uptake may be moderated by the specific ion concentration...

Any ideas as to what this is?

As an experiment, I am having a batch of modified K-Lite blended that will incorporate 15% NH4-N; the original and MSU RO have 5%, while MSU WW is 25%. I thought about going higher, but that pushes it to be "K-Even-Lite-r" Terry is dead-on with the multivariate nature of this discussion...

Any ideas as to what this is?

This is one of the issues with discussions about feeding - most “answers” are based upon anecdotal evidence, and there may be other factors involved that are not identified. Yeah, the symptoms might very well be a nitrogen deficiency, but isn’t it possible that another part of Souther Belle’s...

Cattleya trianae, a four year journey

I know these quotes were from a long time ago... The plant's genetics control its ability to achieve something. Culture determines how well - or not - it can do so. So the bottom line is that if a plant is not living up to its genetically-programmed capabilities, it's a cultural shortcoming...

Yes, that photo is much better.

    Paph Lowii Double Spiking

Paphs bloom from the crown, not from between lower leaves like a phalaenopsis.

    Odd orchid bulbs.

Do you pretreat the cubes (if so, how) or just rely on fertilizer choice for pH control?

    Orchid Wiz is Back!

Got this today: Will there be another version of the software? Version 20 represents an attempt at finding a business model (pricing, effort and release frequency) that works for us and for our customers. If in the next few months we learn a good number of our regular customers are still with...
