    Cattleya Hardyana

David, how quickly does the half inch of water evaporate off in the summer? Is it permanently there?

Cattleya warscewiczii Habitat in Colombia 2024

Wow what a treat see these Leslie! Wonderful. It must be fairly wet to support all those epiphytes.

I’d say that the plant is fundamentally healthy and you may be just losing a few older bulbs and leaves after a repot. It happens. If you are seeing new bulbs and tons of roots then just give the plant some time to adjust after repotting. How much sun do you give your plant? Catts like this can...

Phrag Lovely Lynne 4n x sib blooming thread

Thanks Darlene, I wouldn’t have believed it was possible to grow these so quickly indoors without the aid of a greenhouse, but it’s a super vigorous group.

Will, You did! I’d no idea then that they would grow so well.

I would love to breed with this, either self it or sib it if there is another red of similar quality.

Cattleya purpurata ‘select’ with 17 blooms

Yes as long as it’s fairly dry. I did it with all the tuberous begonias last year. They love the damp mild climate and appear to be resistant to slugs! When it’s died down I keep the rain off the pot.

Not long now for the first bloom. The side branch is now evident, maybe a throwback to the quarter dalessandroi parentage. Always good to see this especially on the first plant to flower from the group. It promises more of the same for the others. It has put up a tall, much more adult looking...

Cattleya purpurata ‘select’ with 17 blooms

It’s a single flowered tuberous begonia, in its second year.

    Cattleya Hardyana

David, the inner pots that I use vary greatly depending on what I can get hold of on Amazon. Some are ‘orchid’ pots with slits and holes like yours, others are square or round aquatic pots. Square pots usually mean that it can sit in the upper part of the round outer pot and leave a void for...

    That lueddemanniana is perfection!

    Cattleya Hardyana

David, thanks for your comments. I have similar concerns and agonise long and hard as to when the best time is to repot each particular plant. One of the benefits of having a fairly small collection and watering each one by hand each week is that I can make that decision at what seems to me, to...

    Cattleya Hardyana

Guru, it is a semi alba type with just the tiniest pincelada stripes on the tips of the petals.

Terry, have a google for new breeding lines in purpurata.

    Cattleya Hardyana

Another plant that is improving under the new conditions. I checked back and the last time I posted this was in 2016 when the yellow eyes were much larger. Since then it languished somewhat when grown on a windowsill and only flowered very occasionally. Last year it produced a single average...

Cattleya purpurata ‘select’ with 17 blooms

A clone that was bought from Bela Vista orchids via Regina Elsner when it was still possible to import catts fairly easily. It comes from some of the modern breeding in South America and shows much wider, flatter petals. It arrived as a fairly big plant with three leads five years ago and must...
