Phragmipedium Pink Panther (schlimii 'Pink Ice' x fischeri 'Tony')

Fischer ia a synonym of schlimii. As described fischeri doesn't, and never existed in nature. Your plant, in fact all Pink Panthers, are crosses between two different forms of schlimii. I respectfully refer all to the year end Phragmipedium edition of the Orchid Digest as well as a two part...

Paph Guild & Paph Forum Present The Slipper Orchid International Speakers Day: A Virtual Experience

If anyone here didn't get this I am sending along. It is virtual so you can attend from anywhere you have a computer. You can submit photos of your slipper orchids in advance as well. This should be a good, and safe time! Some of us can recoup the $30.00 registration fee with the vendor...

    Phragmipedium caudatum - First blooming

Happy! There is detailed accounting of what the differences are between the three Andean species in the year end special Phrag. edition of the Orchid Digest from last year. You can get a copy from their website. The only morphological difference is in the morphology of the slipper...

    Paphiopedilum bullenianum bud

Good morning all. This has been a very interesting thread to read and I want to thank everyone for sharing what appears to be years of thought, observation, and research into this name. There are few things I would like to add. Paph. cerveranum demonstrates a lot of variation in the leaves...

    Phrag. d'alessandroi 'DD #2'

Some growers, myself included, have had a lot of success using modified hydroponic pots for kovackii. I go into much detail in the year end issue of the Orchid Digest. There bigger species, kovachii, boisserianum, longiflium, caudatum, etc., won't culture well in a tray. Schlimii might...

    Phrag. d'alessandroi 'DD #2'

I have seen single growth plants throw out two (2) and three (3) branches. If you have a real v. d'allessandroi it should become obvious by the second flowering season. Space is a must for all besseae to reach this size. As in the photos trays work and so do large clay orchid pots, the...

    Phrag. d'alessandroi 'DD #2'

OK, although there are two (2) spikes on the plant but this is the real thing. Sometimes besseae can put out a single branch but not like the plant in the photo. V. d'alessandroi cannot be differentiated by any other means. Those colors, petal characteristics, etc., can be found in every large...

    Phrag. d'alessandroi 'DD #2'

Eric, Denis has given up orchids and now owns a coffee shop in Vilcabamba, Ecuador where he lives with his family. BTW the plant in the photos does not exhibit the correct characteristic of true v. dalessandroi. Given its size, it should. Wide, shallow clay pots can achieve the same results...

    Orchid Digest - Phragmipedium issue!

Good afternoon! The special edition of the Orchid Digest out now contains the most accurate and concise treatise on the genus phragmipedium available today. Unlike other books on the genus, the checklist of species is based on population dynamics and the realities of the natural world, and is...

    Orchid Show in NYC

I went to the show last night. There are some really nice paphs and phrags for sale. Jason at Orchids Limited brought some really nice awarded divisions as did Terry Root. Most of the nice plants both had for sale were in the 125.00 an up range. Jason brought a flowering kovachii, one of the...

    Paphiopedilum Cerveranum

That is P. cerveranum. Notice that the notch in the bottom part of the staminode that differentiates P. appletonianum from P. cerveranum is absent. That notch is conspicuous in P. appletonianum. Also notice the horn at the top of the staminode, another distinguishing feature.

    Orchid Show in NYC

I will be attending on Thursday night, opening night. I agree with Eric, expensive but if for no other reason than there hasn't been a show in NYC since the last GNYOS. Its been a long time. From what I am hearing this is being put on by a former concert promoter not an orchid society...

    Paphiopedilum Cerveranum

That is all correct. The pictures attached in the thumbnail are quite small, I tried to enlarge them but I could not clearly see the staminode, which is unique to P. cerveranum. However, the staminode does look like it has the requisite horn on the staminode that differentiates P. cerveranum...

    New species?

You're not missing anything. This is, in sum and substance, what led to the description of gratrixianum v. cangyuanense. This is why I follow Dr. Bream on this, who said in regards to my Facebook post: "Species are variable ... it is time that we acknowledge that and stop describing each...

    New species?

I had no idea this photo would cause so much discussion... But discussion is good! Rick, Yijia Wang did not post this photo on Facebook, I did. I did tag him in the picture. It is a picture of one of my villosums. The plant originally came to me as the variety described in the picture...
