    Beautiful plant- magnificent flowers.

This is what people are being taught?

The fact it is impossible is why she shouldn't try to do it. And in some cases in this article the advice is just downright wrong. My frustration with it is that as a society member and sometimes vendor at orchid shows I meet a lot of people who lose plants, and confidence, by following the...

Paph. intaniae - anyone grown this from flask?

Good evening everyone, Just wondering if anybody has tackled intaniae from flask yet. I have a flask arriving in a day or two. From what I have read here, the plants like their water- so I am planning to use the new orchiata mix I have been using with Paph and Phrag compots and then water...

    Returning to ST and orchids

Welcome back! I am just now getting back to serious orchid growing after a break for a couple of years- and it was nice to find this forum flourishing and full of knowledge as always. Best to you and look forward to more posts as you rebuild a collection.

Anyone using CHC on Phrag. kovachii these days? Favorite non-bark/CHC mix choices?

Good evening Ray, I did a little research on Google for semi-hydroponics but had a tough time narrowing down good information for orchids amid the oceans of advice on growing other more lucrative crops. If you have any particular brand or supplier that you recommend, I would be grateful.

Anyone using CHC on Phrag. kovachii these days? Favorite non-bark/CHC mix choices?

Normally I would be happy to say, but it was a commercial arrangement and I always keep that confidential. FWIW, even I knew when I sent them over that it might be too late to save them- so it was truly all my bad. Kovachii flourished for me the first time around. For a while they grew like...

Anyone using CHC on Phrag. kovachii these days? Favorite non-bark/CHC mix choices?

I am not Frank, but in case it helps I ordered the issue over the weekend from the website. It was The Phragmipedium Issue - 84-4 (they do a special issue at the end of each year focused on a particular aspect of orchids.) If you need more info or want to order the issue, here is the link...

Anyone using CHC on Phrag. kovachii these days? Favorite non-bark/CHC mix choices?

Thanks everyone! Glad I posted because clearly much has happened since I last grew out kovachii. I have a few months before the flasks arrive, so I will get some Orchiata and start testing it out, and Frank- thank you for the info on your article. I will most definitely get my hands on a copy...

Anyone using CHC on Phrag. kovachii these days? Favorite non-bark/CHC mix choices?

Good evening all. Many years ago when the first kovachii flasks came available from Piping Rock, I took on 4 flasks for a "kovachii Chronicles" in which I found the plants grew- both in roots and leaves- at a noticeably more aggressive rate in CHC mix than in bark (note the CHC was soaked for...

    Slc. Fire Magic

Turns out this is a remake- when I took it for judging there was a smattering of awards from several years back. This is an SVO plant and the specific parentage is Lc. Tokyo Magic '6-1' AM/AOS x Slc. Fire Fantasy 'Royalty'. I have another coming into bud now and looking forward to it. Of the...

    Rlc. Pamela Hetherington ‘Coronation’ FCC/AOS

Beautifully grown. I remember when this clone first came out- even before the FCC it drew a lot of attention. It is wonderful see yet another of the classic masterpieces being kept in cultivation- and kept very nicely.

    Paph. Vanguard

Thanks everyone! I am excited to see what it does next. Apologies for the delayed reply- but here is a shot of the base of the plant. There are two additional new growths behind the main growth not visible- so 5 in total. This is going into a much bigger pot next week.

    My First FCC!!

    Slc. Fire Magic

This is one of the most exciting crosses that I have ever obtained from Sunset Valley Orchids. The plants are very compact and the flowers are all over the map in terms of shape and color. Lots of interesting ones so far, and then over the weekend the best one yet opened. The flower is a bit...

    Paph. Vanguard

I just bloomed out a selection of Paph. Vanguard and this was the best of the bunch. Added bonus, it has a smaller growth habit than the other plants and 5 new growths coming already- so promises to be floriferous and compact plant. Took it to Judging on Saturday knowing I was not going to get...

Protocol when someone sells you an original awarded plant

As noted above- the original plastic tag that gets affixed to the plant was what I really wanted in terms of originals, and got that and so all is well. But I was curious if it was customary for the other documentation to come along (in original form) with regards to quality awards since they...

Protocol when someone sells you an original awarded plant

Thanks everyone. At the end of the day, I got the plastic plant tag- which was what I most wanted all along- and it turned out was mine all the time. There was some confusion in what each of us was calling the paperwork. The certificate would have been nice, but a copy is fine for me. Glad I...

How Expensive can Paphs get, and what drives the price up?

I am not sure about Hilo Lip specifically, but yes as a whole Benlate wiped out several key breeders and many generations of breeding stock. Terrible, terrible mess. Change was already in the air since at that time Hawaiian and Far Eastern growers were actively growing the orchid pot plant...
