Just found an article by Sue Bottom at the Saint Augustine Orchid Society relating to the topic of ion toxicity for specific minerals. Full article Link Calcium, Boron, Chlorine, Sodium are the ones I know to look out for but there may be others.

What a great point regarding Chlorine, something else to consider would be Sodium in one's water as that can create ion toxicity at low levels. At what point these minerals become toxic to Paphs if measured in PPM I'm not sure. Thank you for the resource link for the garden hose filter! I...

Sumatra continues to provide amazing discoveries. I can't wait to go there! This has to be one of the coolest species in the genus, period.

Ah ha! Yes that makes sense thanks.

    Calcium loving Paphiopedilums

Hey slipper lovers. I came across a website that purports the following regarding calcium loving paphs: " CALCICOLOUS PAPHIOPEDILUMS Calcium is an important mineral for the growth of some Paphiopedilum species. Adding calcium to their supplement routine is recommended. After much research and...

Gego what would you recommend for a brand and model for a good PH meter?

    Phalaenopsis sumatrana

I know right. I feel like I'm in the jungle when I see this species. Especially a plant that's this vigorous.

    Phalaenopsis sumatrana

Absolutley beautiful. Where may I ask did you get it from?

    Salts from fertilisers

Ray, are your plants just as happy getting 100 ppm N weekly as they were getting say 25 ppm N four times a week in the past? I would expect plants to do better getting fed lower amounts multiple times a week as that would mimic nature.

    Salts from fertilisers

Regarding MSU I thought most fertilizers acidify the potting mix over time just like how they lower the PH when you add them to water no? Maybe this depends on the specific ions involved in the ferts at different ratios/concentrations. Regarding EC I'm uninformed on the topic so will need to...

    Salts from fertilisers

Oh wow Ray nobody has ever made this so clear. That makes total sense, thanks man! Regarding glass marbles it would be a fun experiment for sure. I have had issues with semi hydro every time, but honestly I think I was just fertilizing too much and not flushing thoroughly or frequently enough...

    Salts from fertilisers

@Ray Do you prefer that users create new threads for the same related topic if the original thread is over "x" amount of years old? I would think it's better to keep the discussion in the same thread if it's about the same material or in direct reference to a previous post. In this way, the...

    Salts from fertilisers

Rick if points 3-6 are no longer primary concerns then did you do with points 1-2 differently that has led to such success? Many people tout the wonders of MSU combined with RO water.

Brown filaments and tiny sponts on the undersides of leaves

Thank you for the reply DirGo I have to say I try to stay away from heavy chemicals if possible. I do think however at this point that Xavier and Ray are right for a few main reasons. 1. The damage doesn't exactly resemble mite damage that I have seen in the past, nor do I see any webs or...

Brown filaments and tiny sponts on the undersides of leaves

@Roth Xavier, I do believe you are right good sir. I purchased a new PH test kit from General Hydroponics Link which appears to be more accurate as it indicated my solutions have been right around 5 instead of 6-6.5 as my PH pen and strips were saying. I have JUST started to adjust the PH to...

Brown filaments and tiny sponts on the undersides of leaves

Hey Slipper fam 👋 I unfortunately have an issue affecting a few of my paphs. (please see photos) As you can see there is some weird brown spotting/discoloration on the underside of my leaves. The issue is usually the most problematic on the lowest leaf with each newer leaf being less affected...

    Pale yellowish leaves - why????

Yes, I should have said NaCl (Sodium chloride - aka Table Salt) instead of "salt." When I think of salt my mind always goes to NaCl instead of the other salts in the water like Magnesium sulfate. Sodium, Chloride, and Boron at high enough concentrations can lead to ion toxicity and prevent the...
