Recommendations for orchid shows to attend in US?

The Slipper Symposium at Krull-Smith has become the best one for interacting with speakers and attendees. Speakers, vendors and a dinner with an auction with plenty of chances to socialize with other growers. The Paph Forum in D.C. is also good but it's just one day. Great group though. Dave

    24 hour Flash Flask sale!

Flash flask sale (say that 5 times fast). Time to pot up the current inventory and make room for new material. I also don't like running the extra lights when it's hot in the summer. All in stock flasks are 20% off until 8:00 AM Pacific time August 2nd. After that we are potting them all up...

    Johnston IA Orchid Show/Speakers Day

This is still considered illegal as USFWS considers is 'fruit from the poison tree'. I confirmed this recently with USFWS when I was renewing my CITES. The species has still never left Laos legally even though it is offered all over Europe and Taiwan. Dave

Hobbyist that want to start a greenhouse. Have Questions for more experienced than myself

This is a tough way to make a living. I can't tell you when my last day off was. I do this because I enjoy making crosses, growing the plants up and seeing new things from my breeding. I also enjoy traveling for shows and speaking and meeting customers in person who I only knew through email. I...

Most expensive orchid I’ve bought- will it be a good breeding parent??

Is this plant a mericlone or a kieki? Most breeders prefer not to use mericlones as there can be minor mutations in the cloning process that make the plant slightly different from the original. If it is a stem prop or keiki the mutations are less likely. Look in Orchid Wiz to see if this plant...

Updated flask list at Paph Paradise

We added a few new items to the flask list. June flask list There were a couple crosses that surprised me by producing any seed, let alone enough to have extra flasks to sell. The Cascading Henry x liemianum 'Paph Paradise' FCC/AOS, for example. Cascading Henry has glaucophyllum, sanderianum...

    viniferum

They are just sitting next to our Paph wardii. That would put them closer to the heater (not sure if that matters, but it's where they landed). They are in the shadiest part of the nursery as well. Other than that they are treated like everything else. Watered and fertilized once per week with...

    viniferum

'Sparkling Burgundy' is the source of the vinicolor line...this is straight from our late friend Norito. 'JAC' is recessive for vinicolor, but did breed for wider petals with spots. Again, this comes from Norito. Dave

Paph Paradise new spring flask list

We posted a modest offering of flasks that will be here over the Memorial Day weekend. Sorry...the armeniacum are already sold out! spring flask list

    Sunlight Sky Roths Roths Roths

I have never met someone 'new to the hobby' who was willing to invest 10 years and hundreds of dollars in a roth flask. High end roths can be had for the right price, after all 'anything is for sale' if you visit my nursery. However, an average roth from any recent cross with good parents (and...

    Sunlight Sky Roths Roths Roths

As a breeder who works hard to keep my species lines 'pure', this is a disappointing comment. If you present a plant with stonei DNA as a roth you, you are in effect, cheating. Yes, the plants may grow faster and have more impressive color, but they are not roths. If the species was to be wiped...

    Two Paph rothschildianums

According to the OZ records, Z2519 is indeed 'Rex' x 'MM'. Dave

What is the best roth cross?

It takes us about 5 to 6 years to get roths to bloom from flask in Northern California. I'm sure this winter didn't help much as things are just now 'waking up' in the nursery. We have two (2), count 'em, TWO roths in spike right now. Out of 50+ blooming size plants. We needed the rain but cold...

    Paphiopedilum leucochilum ‘Blackest Knight’ AM/AOS

I always try to stay positive at the judging table. That said, don't be overwhelmed by color. It is 40 points on the Paphiopedilum scale, not all 100. The form is nowhere near FCC quality. There are awarded leucochilum that don't have hooded dorsal sepals, so those set the standard. The pouch...

After 40 years - rethinking my place in the world of orchids

I was in my mid-30's when I started, but we don't have any kids. Some of our better judges started after retirement. Traveling to out of town shows and judgings is a great way to meet new people with similar interests. Dave

After 40 years - rethinking my place in the world of orchids

There will always be differences among centers, especially when certain areas see more of one particular genus or group due to climate or a nearby nursery. Paph rothschildianum is a good example. When the last generation of OZ roths hit our area, CSNJC and Pacific Central gave out a few FCC's...

    Paph Paradise February Flask list

A few new items have been added...some fall under the 'WOW' category! Macabre Illusion x Hawaiian Volcano should produce flowers with petals ranging from deep red to black. There are a couple other black petaled crosses as well as Paradise Gem x Lucky Charms, our two best teacups. Paph...

    Paph. rothschildianum

Bill and Lynn still work full time jobs along with raising their son and a whole mess of orchids! When I saw Bill at the Paph Forum he said they had something like 10 straight weekends with shows coming up. I doubt they will produce a new price list until that marathon is over, and I know he...

After 40 years - rethinking my place in the world of orchids

I have been in the judging program for almost 20 years. The only reason I do it is that our group (California Sierra Nevada Judging Center) gets along very well and we have fun. If it wasn't fun I wouldn't do this. I have judged all over the country and there are other groups that are great to...
