    Paph Guild 2022

Registration is now open for Paph Guild 2022. The meeting will take place January 15-16 in Ventura, California. Just a short drive to the orchid nurseries in Santa Barbara. The event is in a fairly large room so there will be plenty of space for social distancing. Details and registration...

    Paphiopedilum umatilla

Do NOT keep that plant wet. Multiflorals need good drainage and do not like wet feet. Repot the plant, trim off any dead roots and treat it like your other multiflorals. This plant looks like the roots might be dying. Dave

    Paphiopedilum Paradise in Burgundy

First one to bloom this season. This is a cross of (After James x King Charles). Paph After James is a huge Maudiae hybrid from the Orchid Zone. King Charles is 75% charlesworthii and 25% Hellas. I'm very happy with the outcome of this cross.

    Best way to store pollen?

Once the flower is open it is generally ready. Make sure the texture is 'gooey', then you are good to go. Dave

    Best way to store pollen?

I store my pollen on wax paper in coin envelopes inside plastic containers, in the fridge. I have successfully used pollen that was several years old. As long as it is still 'gooey' there can be viability. Terry Root once told me that he once successfully used pollen that was 7 years old. The...

    Flask list updated

We have added a few new items to the flask list, including Paph Johanna Burkhardt, Paph lowii albescent x album and a new Phrag hybrid. Paph Paradise flasks

    Paph. rungsuyanum availability?

I know someone in Thailand with flasks, but they are still not legal as there is no CITES from Laos. Until that happens all of them are off limits in the USA. Dave

    Paph. rungsuyanum availability?

None have been exported legally from Laos. People have raised them and shipped flasks with CITES from Thailand, but that is not the country of origin of that species. The CITES from Thailand is worthless without a paper trail back to CITES issued in LAOS. Don't buy smuggled plants. It's not...

    Paph Paradise new flask list

Our flask list has been updated. Many items are in limited supply, and the Paph rothschildianum flasks were selling before we even posted them! These roths crosses should raise the bar and set new standards for this species. Paph Paradise flasks If you are in a cold climate we will hold...

    Paphiopedilum spicerianum ‘Hercules’

Indeed not limited to this species. We bloomed a rothschildianum from overseas that is clearly a hybrid. Also lowii album that is a Toni Semple hybrid. We refuse to use this material for breeding. Dave

    Paphiopedilum spicerianum ‘Hercules’

I will have to see if any are ready to go. We moved a whole bunch. I have an outcross of two jungle plants in community pots. We hope to offer seedlings next fall. Dave

    Paphiopedilum spicerianum ‘Hercules’

Unfortunately most of the spicerianum on the market are tainted. The hybrids grow better and look better so they were selected by breeders over the true species. I wrote a blog post about this, not sure if I have already posted it here: Paph spicerianum We are maintaining 2 breeding lines of...

Papiopedilum Paradise Gem, another mini complex

Pacific Rainbow has been a difficult parent, as we tried about a dozen crosses before this one took. Most of the failed crosses were with white complex so that may have been part of the problem. I am trying it on Doll's Kobold today. Time will tell! Dave

Papiopedilum Paradise Gem, another mini complex

One of our goals is to produce miniature Paphs for folks who have limited space. Paradise Gem is (In-Charm Topaz x Pacific Rainbow). These are two pretty nice ones that have bloomed in the last month. Keep in mind we were setting records for high temperatures here in California as they opened...

Paph Lucky Charms, a mini complex

This is the first seedling to bloom from our cross of (Doll's Kobold x Happy Shamrock). We just registered it as Paph Lucky Charms. Our records show that the lab got 10 replates but we can only find about 24 seedlings in the nursery. Not sure what happened there. We will release a VERY small...

    Paphiopedilum violescens

An unusual little species from New Guinea. These can be very challenging to grow. I have only seen one plant that wanted to hang on to its old growths. Most seem to lose the older growths as the new ones mature. Might have been the strain I was working with before. This strain seems to be very...

    Paph Magic Paradise 'Niagara' AM/AOS

Good question! I just looked closely at photos of Paph liemianum and this plant and the staminodes look very similar. I will have to examine them more closely at the nursery tomorrow. I guess I better not take this hybrid back to liemianum or we would never be able to tell we have a hybrid. Dave

    Paph Magic Paradise 'Niagara' AM/AOS

We were finally able to have judging yesterday! This plant received an 88 point AM/AOS. This is the first award to a hybrid made by Paph Paradise (all previous awards to our breeding were species). This particular plant has the best color we have seen from the cross so far. There have been a few...
