    Testing the waters

Aloha from Honolulu! I greatly admire you highly-skilled folks who grow orchids in Canada, Utah, Austria, and the like. Particularly those of you without greenhouses. Looking forward to seeing your flowers!

Paphs, Phrags and other surprise orchid buds

Very nice! And I agree that it fun to share with fellow-slipper fans. There is just something about these plants that is hard to fully appreciate unless you’ve actually watched them unfold. Thank you, Michael, for taking the time to share them with us.

Phragmipedium Majestic Tresses 'Franz' with Franz Glanz

Amazing! Another decade and maybe my little seedlings will look like that. Ha!

    Phrag vampire slayer

Nice plant - and room for more!!

    Phrag pearcei

I hear you! Working from home has been great for me. I spend my commute and “dress up” time watering. I can read and type and even Zoom with a bit of mud on my shins and no one cares. I am not looking forward to heading back down the hill every morning.

    Paph hirsutissimum

Wow. The greenhouse is rockin‘ at Rich’s! A lot of good plants in bloom there.:D

Paph. Saint Swithin and Michael Koopowitz

They are both nice, but the MK is a show-stopper!

    Phrag Don Wimber

His name is George, I believe. He’s a really nice guy, too. I asked him about it. First, he’s been taking pictures a long time (and he’s got some really nice plants). One thing I recall is that he takes a lot of pictures to get the right one. I believe he uses lights, too, at least some of...

    Phrag pearcei

Thanks Happy. Mine is doing “ok”, even had (has?) a couple blooms, but I think I will bring it up in the light spectrum a bit. I want mine to look like Rich’s one. 🥰

Oh man, you better lock the door!!!

    Don Wimber 3N sibling seconds

That is one sweet plant! These are good pictures, but it hard to capture that intensely rich color that you see in person. There is nothing quite like the color of Don Wimber and Ouaisne . Congratulations!

    Phrag Frank Smith

The last pic is my fave! The petals may vary, but that pouch is so good!! My Krull-Smith Frank Smiths from Bill all bloomed out as China Dragon. I got a “for sure” Frank Smith from him last fall, but it has not bloomed yet. I should see if I can find it and check for a spike.

    Phrag pearcei

Wicked cool plant! (And a nice humble brag.) I have a younger one, from Woodstream I think. Any culture tips you want to share?

    Phrag Don Wimber

Wow - I love that central burst of yellow and robust orange!

Disappointing flower of Phrag. QF Malia

Michael, I would cut that spike off and see what the next growth does before giving up. Phrags are particularly vulnerable to flower-part anomalies. I ended up with an AM/AOS on a phrag that first bloomed (for me) with no pouch and I have seen every oddity you can imagine (just because I have...

    Phrag. besseae fma. flavum

    I love it! Well done!!!

    Phragmipedium kovachii nutrient deficiency?

Hi Anca, Kovachii are tough to grow and I anxiously await the advice of experts here. I associate that loss of chlorophyll in an otherwise healthy-looking plant with some sort of chemical application, either fertilizer or pesticide, perhaps in an inadvertent concentration in that one spot...

    Tall tails - Phragmipedium humboldtii

Good growing! Amazing petals!! I am sooooo jealous!!!

    Paph. Hung Sheng Eagle

    Gorgeous beast!

    Phrag Jason Fischer

The intense red of the Jason Fischers is worth waiting for!
