    Wanted Stanhopea backbulbs

Hello, If anyone is repotting a Stanhopea this season, please keep me in mind for some backbulbs. I would like to experiment growing them under lights. No need to waste a division with with a strong lead. I want to try different substrates, mounting etc... so backbulbs are better option. Thanks

    Free-flowering Paphs?

Hi all, I was having a conversation with a friend about the wonder of the new, modern free-flowering Catt hybrids and we got to speculating about whether any effort has been made to breed free flowering Paphs. P. maudiae "The Queen" was mentioned as one plant that would seem to flower freely...

    Phrag besseae 'Mega' x self

I don't really know. Inbreeding can concentrate mutant alleles. To my mind crossing two of the best reduces the risk of homozygous bad alleles. But if the plant has been line bred through generations with strong selection against bad alleles any advantage from an outcross is too small to be...

    Phrag besseae 'Mega' x self

I would sibling cross the best ones. There is slightly less chance of concentrating bad genes... Unless we know this one has already been through several rounds of welding and the bad genes have been weeded out.

Might be worth another round of selfing. They look very lovely.

    Wanted Pot. Love Passion ‘Orange’

That is a lovely flower. Sorry for you loss. I wish you good luck finding it again! What has been some what successful for me is to search Ebay with the cultivar name. It will likely turn up nothing but you can save the search and set a notification for Ebay to email you if it gets listed. I...

    Growing Area

Tony, I think what you need is something like this: By having the shelving on wheels you can move the shelving closer together -- no center aisle -- and if you need to do something you then just wheel out the shelf you need. This is much how libraries archive books but for plants: P.S...

Disa uniflora, one year from flask

Those are good roots in IMG_0500 and the plant in IMG_0544 looks good. I like the pots you are using. The moss in IMG-0496 looks too dry. These can grow in full sun if kept suitably wet. So far so good. Good luck!

    Moss species for Phrag culture

What is called java moss in the aquarium trade is actually several species. The java moss grown in Singapore turned out to be Taxiphyllum barbieri -- according to a Singapore bryologist in 2003 or so when the moss craze was taking off. Vesicularia dubyana ad it turned out had just been...

    Moss species for Phrag culture

You could try something like Java moss. I grow it in my aquariums but it does grow emersed and am growing some around my orchids. It does not grow densely and remains airy. I used to grow Masdevalias in thick mounds of the stuff. It will need high humidity. You can buy it as algae free tissue...

    Moss species for Phrag culture

I would think you don't want a moss species that would grow so dense that it could impede the flow of water into the substrate and through the pot.

Short vs tall pots for Phrags

I'm sorting it to size and use pieces about 1/2 - 3/4" in size. Larger chunks at the bottom, smaller chunks to the top. Those I have transplanted look to be happily sending out new roots. Time will tell... I punch a hole in the side of the yogurt tub about 1" from the bottom so there is a...

Short vs tall pots for Phrags

All my Phrags are going into yogurt tubs and lava rock. I will let you know how that goes...

    Hello from Ocean Shores Washington

http://www.killifishofwestafrica.co.uk/Code_Library/HAH98.htm I'm making the big assumption this is the same Nevin Aspinwall. I had a brief opportunity to converse with Rosario last November and it felt like such an honor -- the highlight of the evening -- even though I was the invited...

    Dendrobium devonianum

Sounds like a candidate for potting up in lava rock.

    Paphiopedilum Bel Royal

Alas, I do not live in Puerto Rico so I could grow one out doors.

    Mini Multi-Florals?

In-Charm has done some helenae x multifloral crosses. Several have been posted on this forum. E.g.: https://www.slippertalk.com/threads/paph-in-charm-helen-in-charm-lady-x-helenae.53302/ and https://www.slippertalk.com/threads/paph-vanguard-x-henryanum.53386/#post-730844

    Charcoal

I share you skepticism, Ray. What I expect is that the tank pH drops suddenly or some other perturbation and this increase in H+ or other molecules forces other molecules off the carbon. I don't expect it has the same affinity for all molecules and ions... Whether activated or not, charcoal...

    Charcoal

Charcoal filters by adsorption -- stuff just sticks to it. This adsorption will continue until it is full up with stuff. In aquariums we experience the problem of the carbon suddenly dumping all the stuff it has absorbed into the water column with little provocation hence the need to replace it...
