    Top 3 Favorite Films

I think of Auntie Mame as the "chicken soup" of movies. It's good for whatever ails ya - and is guaranteed to put a smile on your face.

    13th International Slipper Orchid Symposium - November 3, 2012

I'm still in the begging and groveling stage. As soon as everyone commits (and it should be soon), I'll publish the list.

I agree - that was the toughest part.

Paph. Fumi's Delight 'Canary Convention' AM/AOS

I could tell you some things about that cat, but I'm going to keep quiet since I hope to get a division of this paph someday. He is very very shy and you would never know he is around, but I know Theresa loves him to death so I hope he comes out of this in good shape.

    13th International Slipper Orchid Symposium - November 3, 2012

The 14th International Slipper Orchid Symposium returns to the Orlando area in 2012 and will take place Saturday, November 3, 2012 at the Howard Johnson Altamonte Springs. This is the same venue as in previous years, but the facility has a new name and some very nice upgrades. I will post...

Chysis bractescens v.coerulea 'Hermosa Dawn' CHM/AOS

Tenman, every time you post a photo of this one I just can't stop looking at it. I keep hoping it will show up on your spacemaking sale list some day and I will be lucky enough to see it before Eric!

Orchid show chairs...can I pick your brain?

Chairing a show can be great fun and super rewarding - but you really need help. Find some good, reliable people to help and don't be afraid to delegate. Things tend to pile up and all fall on the chairperson if you don't - and you'll kill yourself if you try to do everything.

Ebay item sold not fulfilled by seller!

Well that was nice of you. It doesn't look like that seller has too much experience with selling on eBay yet - so you really gave him a break.

    Importation???

I think there's also an issue of accuracy. You need to be careful if you base your purchasing decisions on the photos, because a lot of these overseas sellers have discovered the Hue & Saturation slider in Photoshop and, in addition to overstatements of size, tend to jack the colors of their...

Stupid question #253 - stake the spike?

If staking is necessary, I find that I almost always get a better viewing angle of the flower by allowing the flower to open before staking.

    Santa Barbara International Orchid Show

How many Volkswagens did you count? I think there were three, but I got thrown out by the orchid police before I could finish seeing the exhibits because I had illegally brought my purchased plants into the exhibit area.

    Flasks from Hengduan Mountain Biotech.

I'll try to provide the short answer until I can post some photos and more details after I get back to Seattle. The quality of plants and flasks was top of the line all the way - no exceptions. Most plants in the flasks were ready to go directly into 2.5" pots. Compotting would seem an...

    Flasks from Hengduan Mountain Biotech.

As of last night when the show closed for the day, there were still several very nice flasks of several varieties available on Dr. Perner's sales table. I don't recall seeing any of the one that everyone wants. I thought they looked great and people tell me (I'm sure I don't know why) that I am...

    Phrags, Phrags, Phrags

Wonderful! As I scrolled down I could already sense that Eric might experience the orchid equivalent to a diabetic coma when he saw this.

Phrag. fischeri 'Purple Puff' (x self)

I probably shouldn't have seen this.

    just wondering

Yes! That's another very important point! None of us as growers is infallible and accidents do happen! I try to place divisions of each of my really great plants in other collections so that when I kill the one I have, there is a good chance of having a backup.

    Paph tranlienianum flask

It looks like you still ended up with quite a few healthy, strong plants. Sorry to hear about your foot!

    just wondering

Several years ago, I was offered the remains of what had been one of the most important collections in the Pacific Northwest. It took years to nurse those plants back to a state of good health and many never recovered. The mite damage that occurs to an unattended collection of desiccated...

    20th woc

It's worth taking the 5 minutes to join that forum just to see the photos. The displays are nothing less than I would have expected, and the Nepenthes are out of this world.
