    Double Kovachii

I haven't repotted it since buying it 5 years ago (?) but I think there's a fair amount of stone in the mix. I certainly added limestone on top. Yes, it sits in a tray of about 2cm of water, and I water it heavily every day. Our water is very acidic spring water, loaded with dissolved salts.

    Double Kovachii

The blooms are each about 7" across (roughly 18cm) at the moment, but they have only just opened up, so will get a bit larger over the coming week especially. I would expect them to reach about 8" across or roughly 20cm as a minimum. The spread from bloom to bloom (at their greatest extent) is...

    Double Kovachii

Old Faithfull: this lovely kovachii blooms each autumn, but this is the first time its had two at once. Unsure why / how the colour streak came about in the 2nd of the blooms.

    Hanne Popow family shot

By the way, you can see a huge difference in quality between the 2 Hanne Popow flavums. The poor one is in the upper right, bought from one of the Belgian growers who was just trying to raise pot plants for the wider market. Its pretty unexciting. The other is lower right corner, bought from...

    Hanne Popow family shot

Thanks folks. As I said, its the first time in 18 years of growing phrags that I have had so many of this group in bloom at the same time, seemed worth the while recording it..!

    Hanne Popow family shot

Not so simple. Phrags really do not like coming out of rockwool and into bark. Basically they lose a couple of year's growth as they recover from the change. So I am very reluctant these days to make that change, unless I feel I must. It seems that the micro-fibres of the rockwool tend to cling...

    Hanne Popow family shot

My water supply is from freshwater springs in the gardens that surround our house, so lots of dissolved salts, and very acidic. Mostly I water nearly all the phrags every day, pretty heavily. The main exception are the ones in rockwool, which I water every 3 days or so. (I don't like rockwool...

    Hanne Popow family shot

NYEric you got it almost perfect. The Hanne Popow in the lower left is also a flavum, according to the tag that came with it from Orchids Limited. It must have had its great pouch colour come in from the schlimii parent, as it is the best Hanne Popow flavum I have had or seen. In any case...

    Hanne Popow family shot

Couldn't resist taking the time to bring these all out of the greenhouse and take a family portrait. Photo includes Phragmipedium besseae and besseae flavum; Phrag schlimii; Phrag Hanne Popow (including one made with besseae flavum); and Phrag St. Ouen (which is Hanne Popow crossed back with...

It is a good looking one isn't it..?

    Jason Fischer 3N

Just received a Jason Fischer 4N from Orchids Limited, by post from Germany (where it is easier to ship to from outside the EC). Small size, so probably at least a year if not 2 or 3 before I can hope to see a bloom, but I'm glad it isn't a 3N, as I will be able to compare the two. Just have to...

    Phrag. Bouley Bay

That is a fabulous Bouley Bay..!

And just a wee break in the colour on the pouch. Maybe due to the 3N...?

Why do we feel we must use acronyms so often? Is it all that painful to type out full words? Natural Spread is a lovely phrase. NS means zip to me..! The natural spread is 92mm.

Pardon my ignorance, what is "NS"..?

Longifolium on both sides, so I would expect some horns as being likely. Should still be lovely.

Bought from Orchids Limited several years ago. The plant has never been happy, and I can't recall it ever blooming for me before. So I was very surprised and delighted to see the spike developing.

    A couple in bloom

The Fritz is superb. Could you photograph these in the shade though? Direct sunlight makes the highlights bleach out, etc.
