    First bloom CA913

I just went out into the greenhouse to double check these plants. They are all healthy and strong growers, but I don't see any sheaths. I checked the invoice and it was dated 9-22. We very likely got these at about the same time, but you've done a better job growing them. Oh well, next year...

    First bloom CA913

I'm impressed. I have a flask of these, but mine are still at least a year from blooming. Maybe I need to take a closer look at them. Don't know how I could be so far behind as I thought I had purchased them when they were first available. Mike

    Variegated Phrag.

I have a large Bouley Bay seedling that has variegation on every leaf. It is very symmetrical on the last leaf. Won't know for a few years what new growths might look like. This seedling was the only one of the flask like this. Mike

    Paph Season 2024

Thanks for the info. My WBW x roth plants are from PAM0269, and the Hsinying Anitas are from PAM0240. I will keep my fingers crossed and will post photos when they bloom. I was with Sam when the plants were selected. They were the nicest from a large group of sibs. He was so meticulous with...

    Paph Season 2024

Tony What do you mean by "mess"? Are you seeing poor quality or likely mislabeled plants? I have a bunch of these blooming this year, including some of this same cross. Mike

Moving plants in the winter: O MY

It is often cold during our first shows of the season. I have used bags for years with no ill effects from the cold. I estimate that the maximum exposure has never been more than 4-5 minutes from the car to the venue. There is just as much risk to the plant in the bag while travelling to the...

    Some Orchiata related remarks

Heather 2 inch with classic + perlite, 4 inch with classic + perlite, 6 inch with classic + perlite or power, and finally nursery containers with power. I don't let them sit in water, but I do water at least 3 times per week. Mike

Is $700 a year on orchids a lot?

Roughly $2K/year, with about 900-1000 plants in the greenhouse and plant room. The availability of quality, affordable plants, of the types that will grow well for me, as well as free space, are the limiting factors.

    Shin-Yi Williams x sanderianum

First bloom, Shin-Yi Williams "Dark Chocolate" x sanderianum "Lady in Red" from OI. Dorsal width 2.9 cm, petals length 24 cm, growing in 5 inch pot with Orchiata and Grodan cubes. Shin-Yi Williams is William Ambler x roth, and William Ambler is wilhelminae x roth, so this cross should be...

The right care for Phragmipedium kovachii?

In compots and for the first 6 months or so in 2 inch pots, I use the long strand, NZ sphagnum moss. I need to mention that this has been very difficult to find in quantity, at a reasonable price for some time. After this I move them into bark/perlite/crushed limestone. I believe the...

    Gary Romagna

This is Saint Swithin "Jumbo Jamboree" AM/AOS x rothschildianum "New Horizon" FCC/AOS, first bloom seedling. I saw the pod parent a few years ago and was impressed by the size of the dorsal and the boldness of the stripes. The dorsal on this flower is just 4.8 cm, and the natural spread is 25...

    Sold For Sale kovachii seedlings

I have some kovachii seedlings that I am willing to sell at very reasonable prices. The plants are from Chuck Acker and the four on the left are cross CA735 (2021), and the four on the right are cross CA874 (2022). I believe 735 used his most colorful Pks and CA874 was with his flattest Pks...

The right care for Phragmipedium kovachii?

Gang I do not doubt any of you when you speak of the trouble you have with kovachii, but I just don't understand. They seem to grow like weeds right out of the flask, when planted in quality moss. When they are too large for the compots, I move them into 2 inch pots with moss, for about 6...

Just curious, in those more than 20 years, did you buy any Phalaenopsis? Do you do any virus testing? Mike
