    Any Vegetarians Here?? Seeking Ideas...

I've been vegetarian for 18 years; I eat eggs and dairy. I began after seeing the conditions under which animals were raised and killed, and have broken vegetarianism on some instances where I knew the conditions under which the animal was kept and killed and was comfortable with them (fish...

    help identifying old paph, please

Sorry - I've not heard of that collection, so it could be anything. I agree about this plant not being Rosy Dawn; maybe if there's a good batch of McClellan plants this is more along the lines of Freckles or a Freckles progeny...

    looking for famous Roth!

As a lover of all things old, I have 'Borneo', 'Charles E', 'Tenny's', 'Commander', and 'Chester Hills'. My god are they ever slow-growing. My piece of 'Charles E' blooms about once every 3 years, and I've never seen the others flower in nearly a decade of growing! Maybe I'm just not a great...

    help identifying old paph, please

Where are you located? Whose old collection? What were some of the other paphs in the collection? These would all be a tremendous help...there are many old whites but they vary in their prevalence dramatically in or out of the US and East or West Coast. They can sometimes be quite easily...

    Paph Snowbird

Yes that's totally correct - sorry! I'm not sure what I was looking at... It would be Diversion 'New Orleans' HCC/AOS, the only awarded plant, very common, vigorous, and easy to grow. Maybe that explains why Snowbird grows so well. I wonder if the goal of Snowbird was to make better whites...

    Paph Snowbird

Paph. Snowbird was registered in 1976 by noted Californian paph breeder Jack Tonkin, and is a cross between Diversion 'New Orleans' HCC/AOS and Paph. Jack Tonkin 'Val's Choice' AM/AOS, according to the label on one of the unawarded clones I have. Its parents are important in their own rights...

Victorian era orchid publications - I'm looking for sources

Reichenbachia, certainly Dictionnaire Iconographie Des Orchidees Monographie Des Cypripediums, Selenipediums, et Uropedilum Lots of bits and pieces from Orchid Review (which are mostly on google books), the best of which reference specific clones used in hybrids, otherwise impossible to find...

    Help on possible orchid identification

I was thinking Cym. madidum based on the leaf size - chloranthum is in my experience much smaller than the pictured plant, but I've seen maybe two or three of them... Many cyms develop red flowers or red lips as soon as the anthers have been removed from them.

    Photo of roth 'Commander' please

'Chukar' AM/AOS was awarded in 1984, and is from a cross of 'Charles E.' and 'Borneo' made by Jack Tonkin outside of Oakland in the early 1980s.

Parent of P. Jade Lauren Whales

White Knight is an important breeder because it produces seed and it improves its progeny - like other White Knight crosses, when used with something heavily influenced by brachy paphs, Jade Lauren Whales has been pretty spectacular. I only wish we could get them in the states...

    Paph tonsum var. cupreum

Cupreum refers to the reddish color on the undersides of the leaves; compared to 'David' AM/AOS and the like, which have greenish undersides, cupreum-types have very heavily pigmented leaf undersides. A similar "type" is concolor chlorophyllum, which has green leaves lacking the normal reddish...

    Judging Minature Paph's

I think most good judges would consider a flower independent of size. I certainly do - it's always the last thing I look at, it's only worth 10 points, and it can be modified to include ratios and so forth. Judging is not totally objective - it's not robotic, and if you bring in something nice...
