    Phrag Cardinal

The bloom fell off. The leaf span is 7 inches. The yellow leaf is the last leaf remaining from the old growth.

    Phragmipedium Grande?

Label says Phrag Grande, but I'm not clear on how to tell Grande from Supergrande. This is the second time it has bloomed.

    Pollinating phrags

I should point out that Cardinal is not a typo. It is Andean Fire x d'lessandroi. So basically the d'lessandroi version of Inca Fire.

    Pollinating phrags

It seems like there is a small window of opportunity to grab the pollen off a phragmipedium bloom or it will fail to pollinate. Does that work the other way? If I pollinate a bloom that has been open for almost a week am I wasting my pollen? I have a bloom that will be open tomorrow and...

    Fritz schomburg

Thanks Eric. Tom - thanks for the reminder that the grass is always greener on the other side. I used to have a greenhouse, but forgot how January only had a few sunny days in the midwest which reminds me of how the sun was always changing. Sometimes I would be late putting up spring/summer...

    Fritz schomburg

I used a 4000 K LED shop light for the lighting. The color looks pretty close on the computer to what it looks like in front of me. It went from 9-cm wide yesterday to 10-cm today. Kate - That must be nice to mosey into backyard to look at your orchids in January!

Fertilizer research from U. of Michigan

Agree. 121C and 15psi pressure. You can actually boil some bacteria for hours and not kill them. Also, heat won't kill prions which may be a low risk but there was a time when feeding bone meal to cattle was believed to be a good idea.

Tom, Please add me to that list. Thanks.

    Calcium from Phrag

I usually mix Hausermann's Fertilade (liquid) with Ray's K-Lite at around 1/4 tsp per gallon with RO water. I occasionally use a weak solution of Calcium Nitrate. I occasionally flush with RO discard water which actually has lower uS than my tap water and has been cleaned a bit by the...
