Cyp macranthos and tibeticum and hybrids between thm

Hi, catbloome, These are all grown in the ground. I use an inorganic medium of 50% turf ace and 50% 3/8 inch red volcanic gravel (which is shot full of holes). In the past I used pots but I had difficulty keepin the roots cool.

Cyp macranthos and tibeticum and hybrids between thm

I should have mentioned the cultivar group status. I have several of those as well. Julian puts us in that penalty box when we try to subdivide Cyp species beyond what is allowed for other orchids species.

Cyp macranthos and tibeticum and hybrids between thm

I am in the West Sound area across from Seattle. It is ideal Cyp country.

Cyp macranthos and tibeticum and hybrids between thm

froschii certainly causes lots of discussion! I made my statement on the basis of a discussion that Holger Perner and I had during his last visit before he passed away. He had become quite convinced although I believe he said there had been no DNA work at that time. I will have to pull up the...

Cyp macranthos and tibeticum and hybrids between thm

Here is one of my better macranthos var hotei-atsumorianum Here is a nice tibeticum This is Cypripedium macranthos 'John Haggar'. It is macranthos x macranthos var hotei-atsumorianum. Malmgren tried to register it as a formal hybrid in 2011 but it was declined as crossing 2 macranthos was...

Very nice! I really like Gabriella, such large plants with enormous flowers.

    More Cyp Sabine

Almost all of my Cyps are planted in a mixture of 50% 3/8 minus red volcanic gravel and 50% turface (when I lived in CT I used 50% Soil Perfector (fired shale) rather than volcanic gravel). Both of these are extremely freely draining and the turface also holds a considerable amount of water. I...

Cypripedium formosanum and Cyp Lady Dorine

Hi, Linus, I can provide one this Fall. Best,

First Cyp flowers of the year

Yes, these horrid veined things are problems! I agree that the segawae parent is responsible for the early bloom. Barry Phillips blooms right alongside these.

    More Cyp Sabine

I hit Send accidently before adding all the pix. Here is a first time blooming Sabine. It has very intense flower coloration. I will set it aside to see how it matures. Like Linus I find that most album flowered Sabines have slightly smaller and more oval-shaped flowers, like the one at the...

    Cypripedium Sabine several plants

Cyp Sabine is another early bloomer for me. I start off with two nice clumps. Each bloomed for the first time in 2015 and were in the same raised bed through Fall 2019. I then moved them such that one clump is in my new display bed and the other is in a mixed garden bed. Both were a bit...

Cypripedium formosanum and Cyp Lady Dorine

Here is Cyp formosanum and a Cyp formosanum hybrid, Lady Dorine, both blooming now. Lady Dorine is a hybrid of formosanum with fasciolatum and is one of my favorites. I find the flowers to be quite elegant and beautiful with their faithful reproduction of their parent formosanum, and while the...

First Cyp flowers of the year

Here is Cypripedium Bernd. It is an early bloomer, first opened last week. This is also an image link test.

    Cyp. candidum in situ

Those look great! I didn't realize there are still Cyp candidum in the state. Very nice, thanks!

    Linus Cyps

I like Chauncey but I find it less forgiving than parviflorum, same for Emil. I have a would-be display of parvi's, pubescens, makasin's, and some of the really nice yellow hybrids like these two - the species clump fast and expand while the hybrids very slowly expand.

    Fertilizing Cypripediums

The myth of sensitivity to fertilizer has been handed down over the years from some misguided person through many descendent authors who just cut and paste since they don't actually keep the plants. I fertilize my Cyps exuberantly and the more fertilizer they get the more lush they become...

Cypripedium acaule - watch with me

It is actually a labor of love. I wouldn't miss it, it is very peaceful and I rarely run into other people. The area has a trail going through it but it is not used much, and a road through the park runs by a short stretch but there are not many cars. Fortunately one has to walk up to see the...

Cypripedium acaule - watch with me

Beautiful colony! I have been following a colony in NW Connecticut since 2002 that is spread out over about 2 acres of the last remnant of virgin white pines in CT and one of the few in New England. The area was too remote for the king's mast cutters to get up to and managed to avoid the...
