Who went to the World Slipper Conference

Possibly 1 or 2 still hiding somewhere, but I probably won't find them until I go through repotting this spring.

Who went to the World Slipper Conference

Fairly compact plants. I haven't seen very many flower, but there is certainly variation in flower quality as would be expected from a cross of this type. Some have been quite nice, and the grex has 2 AM/AOS awards to its credit. From what I can tell, the plant that Charles saw in Quintal's stud...

    Paph. Rosslyn 'Pitts'

Rosslyn 'Pitt'S' has also been in my collection for a few years. My piece came from a wholesale grower in Hawaii. For me, it seems a bit easier to flower than Rolfei. And, a somewhat vigorous grower for a division of a plant that is probably > 100 years old. Paphiopedilum Rosslyn (godefroyae...

Who went to the World Slipper Conference

I suspect 2023 might be QF Burgundy Blush (Laurie Lei Quintal x Satchel's Legend).

Wanted Black Paph with white accents?

I assume both of the parents used in the SVO cross came from Lehua Orchids (who IMHO is the leader in this type of breeding). Lehua has done several remakes of the original Petula's Sensation cross (one of which received an AQ/AOS) and they currently have multiple grexes available. Here are a...

    Sold fairrieanum

If I understand correctly, when 'SVO Ruby' went in for judging, the cultivar name was listed as 'Red Ruby'. Therefore, the AOS recognizes the AM/AOS award for 'Red Ruby', not for 'SVO Ruby'.

    Phrag Yelva Myhre progeny question

A couple of years ago, I had plants from 2 unnamed crosses awarded. One of them was from Fred Clarke who graciously registered it under the name I suggested. In the other case, the breeder (in Taiwan) gave me permission to register it as long as I indicated they were the originator of the cross.

Wanted Black Paph with white accents?

Minimum order from Lehua is 15 plants, so you might want to go in with some friends. By default, selections are grower's choice, but for an additional charge, you can ask for specific crosses or characteristics (e.g. "Anything black, warty, and hairy, with high contrast in the center and dorsal").

    your oldest orchids

I cannot claim to have nurtured her for most of her life, but one of the matriarchs in my collection is Paphiopedilum Rosslyn 'Pitt'S', which is more than 100 years old. The hybrid (godefroyae x Rolfei) was registered in 1919 by H. T. Pitt, who was a member of the Royal Horticultural Society...

    Need Feedback

If you were inclined to do an action (aside from the issue of available software), a possible option would be to use "eBay for Charity". A friend of mine passed away a few years ago and I did this to help liquidate their collection and raise money for their favorite charity. Of course, I was...

    Paphiopedilum Bailey's Bid

Another fowliei cross registered by Ross -- Paph. Fairy Bird (fowliei x fairrieanum)

Is this Paph fairrieanum a seedling, 4N, or just small?

Some may bloom smaller, but I believe a blooming size fairrieanum would typically have a 6+" leafspan. Here's an example in a 2" pot.

Unfortunate Ebay oops... no hope, right?

I agree with others who have said that if the plants were infested with mealy bugs when they arrived the seller should absolutely refund (or replace) them. Speaking as an eBay seller myself, I would ask that you first contact the seller directly and give them a fair opportunity to correct the...

Anyone Know if These are Registered yet?

FYI... For anyone who would like to go directly to the source, the RHS website has an Orchid Register search facility: https://apps.rhs.org.uk/horticulturaldatabase/orchidregister/orchidregister.asp

Treated myself to a couple of choice paphs.

I like the coloration on your Regine Plows, and there appear to be 5 flowers on the inflorescence!!! Fred Clarke was kind enough to name this cross for my friend Regine. One of the parents is Johanna Burkhardt. Regine and her husband Bruce were quite good friends with Johanna and Hans...

    Orchids 2024

My understanding is that 'Alford' came out of a 'Excelsior' x 'Rex' cross.

    Wanted Large flowered cascading phalaenopsis

I happen to have a Phal. Sogo Yukidan 'V3' coming into flower now (1st bloom seedling). My greenhouse is a bit coolish and damp, which means certain death for most Phals with normal pot on the bench culture. Therefore, I grow all my Phals with NZ Sphagnum in net pots turned on their side and...

    Grammatophyllum scriptum 'Dwarf'

I believe at least one of the dwarf forms currently on the market is a mericloning mutation.

    Wanted Kiwi Bark

The company that was mentioned in NC/GA that sells bark is probably Acadian Supply in Mooresville, NC. They import Orchiata bark (not Kiwi bark) and NZ Sphagnum. Last I checked, it was around $1,500 for a pallet of 72 x 35-Liter bags, not including shipping.

    Paphiopedilum Yang-ji Hawk

(sanderianum x adductum) = Paul Parks, I could care less whether it's called Paul Parks or Yang-Ji Hawk as long as there's sufficient information about the characteristics of the parents used (especially when purchasing unbloomed hybrids). With an anitum 'Dark Star' parent, I would expect some...
