Suggestions for Overwintering Sarracenia leucophylla in Zone 7

In the article I shared above also points that out, that the summer heat is why people usually fail with this species. I guess without special cooling system, they are only meant for Pacific Northwest or The Rockys where the temperature remains relatively cool in the summer.

    Cymbidium care

The ones with large flowers need cold winter months. Without a cold room, you may not see the flowers or only poor performance. The spikes will not properly develop if at all unless they are kept at constantly cool conditions say no warmer than 60 or 55F. Night time can be a bit lower, but day...

    urbanianum

Well, it is very obvious to my eyes that it is not urbanianum for the reasons I specified in my previous comment. What is the other parent? No one can tell for sure, but what do I think the other parent could be? Venustum. The dorsal is very much venustum, the busy even lines. The markings on...

    Angraecum sesquipedale

How old is that plant? How long do the flowers last?

    Ludisia discolor

It is only fragrant during a short time window around midday. So you can easily miss it. It is very strong that you can smell it by being near it. Unfortunately, I was never good with these plants. They would always just fall apart into individual growths as they are starting to do now, and I...

    Ludisia discolor

I have one growth that came off. Another growth fell out the pot. I could try rooting them but don't have fish tank to dunk them. lol I might try moist moss instead.

    urbanianum

I'm 100% sure about it. It's just immediately obvious. The staminode and dorsal are way off at a first glance. I don't understand why some people pass these hybrids off as species??

Hardiness of Tender Bulbs & Storage

Thank you for your input! Yeah, the American Westcoast and the winter rain...but I quite like the light drizzling rain in the summer afternoon in Seatltle! :) I have a deck over my balcony so as long as the plants are brought closer to the wall, I don't have to worry about winter rain and sleet.

    Catasetums & Cycnoches 2024

Thank you. It is indirect afternoon sunlight :) I can see the tiny buds (four, again!) forming now. I expect to see them in bloom around late January.

https://www.carnivorousplants.org/grow/guides/Darlingtonia It is not specific to your region, but I thought it has lots of good info regarding that species.

Hardiness of Tender Bulbs & Storage

Thank you for the reply! Yes, by Amaryllis I meant Hippeastrum. I think I might bring them in because they are the most expensive to replace. Others are much cheaper that I could just treat them as annuals if I wanted to. but then things like Rain Lily and Nerine bloom much better 2-3 years...

Hardiness of Tender Bulbs & Storage

By the way, while talking about tender bulbs, how it went performance wise in case it interests or helps others in the similar growing conditions as I. I only get about 2-4 hours of sun during the warmer months. The daytime temperature is rarely over mid 70s even in the middle of summer. The...

Hardiness of Tender Bulbs & Storage

For those of you who live in hardiness zone 7 and 8, and have grown things like Gladiolus, Dahlias, Amaryllis, Nerine bowdenii, Rain Lily (Zephyranthes candida, also the yellow variety), Tuberous Begonia (odorata but any tuberous type), Calla Lily (colorful hybrids, namely hot pink and dark...

Suggestions for Overwintering Sarracenia leucophylla in Zone 7

Wow~ good to know! They survived the winter outside without protection in zone 7b and 8a! I was surprised to read about purpurea. They can withstand extreme cold. Unfortunately, I don't find them attractive. I like their flowers but not the plants. I want more leucophylla (or hybrids of it)...

Suggestions for Overwintering Sarracenia leucophylla in Zone 7

Thank you very much for the replies!! I feel much better about my plants now. Also, I just doublechecked the hardiness zone for Berlin and it says 8a. I wear three months ago it said 7a! I wonder if the global warming increased the overall temperature and they had to recalculate the data...

    Anticipation

I really like the shape!! Congrats! I have tried Dollgoldi but never been lucky blooming them. They were super growers, though.

Suggestions for Overwintering Sarracenia leucophylla in Zone 7

Peekaboo!! Almost every time I checked on them during the warmer months, there was either a fly or a wasp. Once in, they can never leave 😀😁

Suggestions for Overwintering Sarracenia leucophylla in Zone 7

I also wanted to get dark wine colored Sarracenia flava and green flava as I understand that they are hardier coming from further up north, but then, I wanted to wait until I see how they fare over the winter before adding more.

Suggestions for Overwintering Sarracenia leucophylla in Zone 7

Well, I have hybrids. I understand that they are hardy in the southern states along the Gulf of Mexico. I have also read that with proper winter protection, they can overwinter outside in zone 6. Can anyone verify this? I bought three over the summer and one of them is this dark red plant...
