    Acceptable loss rate?

to be fair to me, since I'm the one who said it, I said up to 10% of my collection currently has some problem. now granted, that's much higher than I consider acceptable, but I've only completely killed one plant so far, so my actual loss rate is much lower. and when I was posting before, I...

S/H Why is it hit or miss with indoor growers?

up until recently, I had zero problems with orchids in s/h. I'm a home grower, and relatively inexperiened (about a year and change), but I like to think of myself as at least relatively intelligent and I'm trying my best to stay informed about the various aspects of orchid culture. So...

    Phragmipedium pearcei heavy load

holy crap! I think it's time to make that into some divisions! I'm sure I can find room for one, especially since it's the parent of one of my favorite phrags, Phrag. La Vivace Epicure Phyllis D Turner. :p

    Haraella retrocalla question

in my experience, the flowers will last 1-2 weeks. luckily they seem to keep sending up new spikes every few weeks.

    Paph lowii 'Princehouse' x sib

Here's the blooms from the first spike, Feb of this year: And here's from the second, just opening now: It's probably nothing special in the lowii world, but I likes it. :)

    Bonsai (Americanized)

PHRAG, the link to artofbonsai.org is indeed quite interesting, and the photos are truly gorgeous. however, I will confess to knowing very little about bonsai--have you got any suggestions for some more basic information?

    AOS membership benefits

it took me 4 months of harrassing them almost every week to get my free plant, and you don't even get to pick which one you get. luckily I got one that I like, but it's a small plant, at least a couple years from blooming.

New slippers!... what the heck are they?

It does look a lot like Landmark, but the petals are much shorter and less twisted than on mine.

    Paph St Swithin

My wife suggested "Stripey" for obvious reasons. So that's what we're calling it. I'm sure there's better St Swithin's out there, but this one is the best in my eyes because of the sentiment behind it. Here's some new pictures with a ruler for scale.

    Paph St Swithin

My wife got me this as a birthday present earlier this week. Doesn't have a clonal name on the tag.

    Paph lowii bloom frequency?

That's what I thought. But like I said, I'm still thrilled that it's blooming! This is a picture of the first blooms. The cross is lowii 'Princehouse' x lowii.

    Paph lowii bloom frequency?

My paph lowii just finished blooming last week, so I cut the spike back. It's a two growth plant, and both are pretty good sized. Well, lo and behold, the other growth now has a spike just beginning to emerge. Obviously I'm thrilled, but I just wanted to know, how "normal" is this? Do...

    Paph. rothschildianum 'Matt Saftenburg' AM/AOS

I thought that because of the shortage of large animal vets that you could get some kind of special deal and easy admission if you agreed in advance to do that. But of course, that depends on you wanting to be a large animal vet. One of my friends did that for a little while and couldn't...

    S/H Seedling Containers

I got some little plastic drinking cups from IKEA that I drilled some holes in the bottom of. Unlike "standard" s/h, for small plants I think just primeagra with watering every other day works better--otherwise by the time you have a reservoir in such a small cup, there's very little room for...

Which paphs need calcium, and how much does each species need?

this discussion has me wondering about water hardness. after all, calcium and magnesium are the two main culprits in making water hard, and many orchid growers use ro water. so...if you were to just use tap water, would you still need supplemental calcium?

Phrag longifolium (not a kovachii hybrid)

I have a longifolium that's currently working on it's 5th and probably final bloom. It's been a fun one--and has spent well over 3 months total in bloom. I'll post pictures later.

    Prime Agra New vs. Old

So far, the majority of the plants I have in new primeagra are doing great. My Phrag Cape Sunset seedling is struggling, but it got a pretty bad fungal infection that I'm not sure can be attributed to the difference between new and old primeagra. interestingly enough, that one was purchased...
