The New Prime-agra, my results and warning to all

hmm...I have been using some new primeagra, and my conclusion is that the very surface is prone to some salt buildup. but a quick misting of the surface or of course thorough watering takes care of that in a hurry. everything that I have in new primeagra seems ok so far, but it's only been a...

Slipper orchid evolution: does anyone care?

I think that both of the esteemed doctors should make new threads explaining the basics of their respective subjects. I've got a BS in Biochem, an MD, and a wife who's a few months away from her PhD in biochem, and a fair number of the things that have been discussed have been way over my head...

    Small question for Dr. Braem.

the trouble is, there's maybe 10 people on this website that will fork out the cash, and to them it will be more than worth it. and there's probably another couple hundred of people nationwide in the same boat. but in order to make it cost effective (in terms of the time to prepare the...

    Phrag besseae 'BBC #2'

Lien, have you tried retaking the photos with the lens zoomed all the way out, macro mode, with the subject just a couple inches away from you? I saw you got pretty sharp results on your first trials, how did that translate into plant photos? By the way, for the photography nuts, has anyone...

    Taking photos and how to's

A great photographer told me once that for every roll of film you shot, you could expect to get 1-2 "keepers," and for every hour of video you shot, you could expect 1-2 min of usable footage. Any more and you're not being selective enough, any less and you're either not doing it right or being...

Blc Momilani Rainbow 'The Gypsy' HCC/AOS?

Hi all, I bought this a few months ago, and it just bloomed. It's pretty, but not what I expected at all. Is this just some unexplained variation, is the flower still in need of maturation, or have I been had? link to what I thought I was getting: click here

    Photography talk

I think for macro work, a flash is hard to use, regardless of type. existing light is much more predictable. just fire up those big ole grow lights, and that should give you enough light to take a decent picture!

    Photography talk

It definitely could use more depth of field...but in order to get that, I would have had to step up the iso and get a grainy picture, or lengthen the exposure and get a shaky picture. I tried both, and this was the one that looked the best overall (I deleted the other pictures or I'd show you...

    Photography talk

actually...I think that you need to know more about photography to get really good photos out of a crap camera than to get the same quality out of an SLR. But with either you need to know something to get really good photos. to take semi-ok photos, any idiot can use a point and shoot, but an...

    Photography talk

now I know I'm hardly an expert photographer, but I like to think that every now and then I take a good picture, and I at least know the basics of photography. that said, here's an example for lien. taken with a Canon digital elph 600, digital macro setting, autofocus, no flash, iso 200, f...

    Phrag. Saint Ouen flavum '#3'

30 seconds is a very long exposure!!! how far away from the plants are you? I take it you're using it as a macro lens, right? try the same shot with each f-stop you have, adjusting the shutter for neutral exposure, see what you think, but 8 should be enough for most purposes. you want a...

    Phrag. Saint Ouen flavum '#3'

with an f stop of 8, and iso100, you should be good to go, provided you have a relatively bright room. I don't think you need to really dial down your aperature to f22 or anything...8 should be enough depth of field. also do you bracket your shots? you might want to try that (take a shot that...

    Phrag. besseae 'BC5'

and furthermore...be sure you're using manual focus! autofocus is difficult to use for plant photos--it always seems to be trying to get the wrong thing. if you use the autofocus though, you can get around this problem slightly by depressing the shutter halfway and holding it, then gently...

If I had a million dollars...

anything is fine. I'm trying to expand my slipper collection though, as I only have 2 paphs and 2 phrags. species would be cool too, but I likes me a good hybrid. in short, come up with ideas. suggest good vendors too if you feel like it. obviously 1 big order is more efficient than...

    Orchids Exposed to Radiation

so...seriously. how many gray are you delivering, what pattern, and what kind of effect do you expect? talk to someone who knows a lot about radiation. I know very little, and I know that. that's why I let people who know about it do it, and stay away from it myself.
