    Phrag grown hydroponically in aquaria

partial vs complete submersion of the roots didn’t cross my mind, i just needed to bury them so the plant would be stable in the LECA lol. curiously the new root growth is very active along the surface of the LECA, though i’ve seen some roots begin to descend deeper as well. i figured they’d...

    Phrag grown hydroponically in aquaria

that sounds cool. i wonder if keeping fast growing aquatic plants (or a pothos in the sump “upstream” of the phrags) would help clean up the water before it gets to them. i guess there’s also the possibility they soak up ammonia/nitrite/nitrate TOO well and leave little nitrogen for the phrags

    Phrag grown hydroponically in aquaria

i’m keeping things simple with a trio of platies at the moment. i’d like to throw some swordtails in there and get a hybrid population going at some point, but i don’t necessarily need another breeding project in my life lol. i’d imagine the warm water temps you need for the discus might not be...

    Phrag grown hydroponically in aquaria

i decided to circle back to this idea after getting some more phrag growing experience under my belt. here are my results with Phrag. Baerbel: April 6th. previously grown in LECA semi-hydroponically for 2-3 months and seemed to be really happy, pushing out a few new roots in that time. i was...

An attempt at album Phragmipedium— Professor Braem x longifolium frma album

Replated the plantlets two weeks ago after noticing some leaf browning. The browning seems to have stopped since replating!

Paph. Quantum Light—alba x Saint Swithin (half album)

Update: replated the remaining colchicine-treated protocorms last weekend!

An album Brachy x Multifloral backcrossed to Brachy…

An update on my one compot from this cross, 7 months after deflasking. They aren’t doing as well as my other cross deflasked at the same time (Saint Swithin x delenatii) but they were also deflasked much smaller comparatively. Starting to see some mottling in the leaves of the largest seedling now!

Paph. Quantum Light—alba x Saint Swithin (half album)

I also deflasked the control group two months ago. Four compots!

Paph. Quantum Light—alba x Saint Swithin (half album)

Unfortunately the weak dose group ended up browning and died (keeping them submerged for several months probably did a number on em). However, the strong dose group is still around. I’m seeing some proliferation now with one patch growing leaves and another patch being entirely callus tissue at...

Paphiopedilum Saint Swithin (rothschildianum x philippinense frma. album) x delenatii frma. alba

7 months post deflasking, and about 2 years since pollinating the mother plant. The seedlings are growing steadily 🙂

An attempt at album Phragmipedium— Professor Braem x longifolium frma album

10 month update: the plantlets have put on some size! The decreased chlorophyll expression in some of them seems to be persisting as well. I haven’t seen much (if any) root growth yet, but hopefully soon.

    Phragmipedium Jason Fischer ‘Red Moon’

I visited Natt’s Orchids in January for my birthday and got the chance to look through their available phrags. Many of them were acquired from Orchid Inn, and I was lucky enough to find this one in spike and for an excellent price. Tucked behind their tag was one of Sam’s, with notes on the...

Wanted (division or pollen) Paph hangianum with a cleft pouch?

I find the “cleft chin” pouch of some individuals of this species to be really charming. Does anyone have previously bloomed plants with this cleft pouch that they’re looking to let go of? The photo attached is not mine, but is listed here as an example of what I’m looking for:

An attempt at album Phragmipedium— Professor Braem x longifolium frma album

8 month update: the three pale plantlets have begun to color up. Watching and waiting to see if the leaves color up entirely or if the chlorophyll is restricted to the centers of the leaves. There are some regular green plantlets nearby for comparison

Paphiopedilum rothschildianum ‘New Horizon’ x ‘Raptor’

I can see the value in only breeding plants that are the best of the best, as it fits in the context of running a plant company whose interest is making marginal improvements generation over generation, as well as getting a return on investment. Orchids take a lot of time, space, and labor to...

Paphiopedilum rothschildianum ‘New Horizon’ x ‘Raptor’

I’ve grown this plant for 2.5 years now and it decided to reward me for my efforts with two buds on one compact growth. One flower is open now and while it’s a small one the pouch is dark, petals horizontal, and dorsal sepal fairly wide. I’m happy with it and currently debating snipping the...
