All the previous flowers on this Mont Remon have been normal, but this one definitely looks as though it's growing horns......
Do our plants recognise the approach of Halloween?

I have a Paph. spicerianum with a little horn on the "chin". Only on one flower though. Very odd!

This is more common with tetraploids and triploids. However they are not as likely to get over it.

Horny??!!...normal!!??

Should I give it a cold shower, then?

I'm hoping it's just the one flower that is affected.... so far the rest have been normal :)
The next bud is about 4 days from open, so I will find out then, I suppose.

@ Fawkes - I don't understand about ploids etc. yet, so have plenty to learn! :rollhappy:

Sure a cold shower. The color is nice but if the rest come out the same ..

It is about the number of chromosomes.

Read the first part and the ploidy section. The rest may be more confusing.

Thank you.
Confusing is the right word - I understand the haploid/diploid terms, but the application of this isn't clear to me.
How do we identify whether our orchids are diploid/triploid etc? Is there a record somewhere, so we can calculate the probability by parentage?
I don't expect to breed from my orchids (famous last words!) but I do want to learn & understand what's involved from the genetic viewpoint as far as I can. :)

Usually if it is more than normal ploidy you will pay more and it will be advertised as such.. One of the difference seems to be that they are slower than normal to get to blooming size but the leaves and blooms are fuller/wider than normal.
