I bought this about a month ago from Ratcliffe Orchids, who are shutting down. Its an EYOF plant which is basically in pretty good shape, but the folks at Ratcliffes must have taken it out of the pot on a Friday and then left it bare rooted until they then packed and posted it to me on the Monday. When I got it 2 days later, I was surprised to find that the otherwise healthy and plentiful roots were thoroughly dry. I quickly gave them a good soak, and potted it up in orchiata bark, and have watered heavily every day since. I was pleased to see this bud come along, but was taken aback when it opened the other day. No pouch! I expect the next bud to develop properly. But I thought it worth posting, as it is somewhat an interesting point. I've not seen this happen before.

it happens and not only on phrags. The second flower of my paph. Chu-Yi Yuki
is also missing it's pouch.

First of all I'm am shocked hearing of Ratcliffes closing. Paul and Mary are retiring? About the dry roots, a lot of vendors ship that way to avoid rotting; it should be fine. About the pouch, maybe it's that good Gigha water... :p
Yay besseae hybrids!

About the dry roots said:
I've always found vendors doing their best to avoid phrag roots drying out in transit. And 4 or 5 days would be too little to see any rot kicking in, unless they sent it soaking wet - which I haven't seen done. No, this must simply have been down to the (acrimonious) split between Nik and Claudia, causing distraction.

Ratcliffe are closing down? That's a real shame, I didn't know. I bought quite a few things from them when they had a great selection of species maybe 10 or more years back, but things have been winding down in recent years...still, this is sad to hear.

I've bought quite a few of their remaining plants....
Very sad news, UK loses yet another supplier

Its a beauty even without. If it continues, breed it with the other pouchless phrags and start a new line.

Well, I got it from Ratcliffes who got it from the EYOF, so I presume it is. I'll have a much better idea when the next bloom opens. But many of these early crosses are somehow getting redder and redder as they are re-made. I have a St. Ouen that is so red I would have sworn it is something else, but I am assured it is indeed a St. Ouen.
