If you can, please help me find another Angraecum germinyanum. I got mine from Petite Plaisance a few years ago, grew it in moss for awhile (as I do most of my non-paphs) and then put it in s/h. It took no time at all for it to swoon beyond recovery. Before anyone gets mad at me, I'm not knocking s/h overall, but it was not right for this species in my conditions, and the bottom line is I lost mine and "need" another. With Hoosier and PP gone, and Malala with no U.S. rep anymore, I'm at a loss.

Many thanks.

Robin

I didn't have luck with the smaller angs. in s/h either:< Though the large types like sesquipedale, Veitchii etc. grow like gang busters in it for me. If I ever get any more of the smaller type ang. species, I'm not going to s/h them again. I feel your pain.

Candace, that's pretty valuable information--thanks. I have noticed a difference in s/h performance based on root size in particular. Again, that wouldn't necessarily be the case for everyone, but, it's what I've seen around here. I can only keep the humidity so high, and with tiny new roots coming out... I do cater to the plants with humidifiers and such, but, I don't live and work in a greenhouse...as much as I'd like to.

Leo, maybe I will poke Greg. He's one of my favorite orchid people to talk to, but I try not to email him or the rest of the crew unless I have a really good reason because there aren't enough hours in the day for any of us. I've been there in the past year and did not seen germinyanum (I have scottianum) and talked to Liese about some other angraecoids, but I do figure either they or Cal-Orchids will turn up with it at some point as they usually do with the species I like a lot. TOF had germinyanum too at one point. This is where I really envy the space / determination to focus on groupings of the same plants--had I purchased several germinyanum, and varied my growing methods, I probably wouldn't be without one. Species paphs, parvi and brachy hybrids, angraecoids and neos as far as the eye could see would be my thing!

Thanks again, guys.

I grow my Angraecum magdalenae in bark/charcoal/ceramic pieces. Sphag stays too wet for it. It likes a good drink, and then drain fast. That's what I've noticed with mine, anyways. I was going to suggest Oak Hill Gardens, also. :)

The culture required to grow angraecoids well is beyond varied depending on the genus, group, species etc. I know pretty much all of it on paper which isn't remotely the same thing as learning what you should do in your own situation--if only! Growing in spaghnum is an art, and you can let things dry out easily when you know you need to--depending on how hard you pack it and the receptacle it's in or the mount it's on, it can work really well for most anything.

Eric, I guess I could email Andy's--I used to check their orchid of the day almost religiously and then stopped because I wanted to stop wanting.

Did you find one yet?? I have one that has a bunch of little side growths on it (I don't know if I'd call them keikis) If you haven't found one yet and I can pull one off with roots, I'll send it to you...just cover the shipping (probably $4.80) and it's yours. By the way, I grow it mounted and hanging DOWN, that's the way it grows naturally. Plus you have to tie it on good because it doesn't like to send too many roots to grab the mount, it just sends them out into the air...here's a pic of the flower.

If anyone is looking to purchase Angraecum sesquipedale, Porter's Orchids just got some in and they are in spike. I don't know what they will be selling for, but I think they will be quite reasonable. His email is [email protected]. Phone # is 517-622-4188.
