I brought my orthoglossum in for judging years ago. It had five spikes running and caught it just right with multiple flowers open per spike. The awards history didn't have anything close to this at the time. But the plant didn't get scored because the judges said that orthoglossum was just an inferior variety of carunculatum (the reference turned out to be bogus).
Anyway I have both in bloom now and put them side by side for comparison.
I would agree that carunculatum is a bigger/better flower, but not the same species.
