I keep it outdoor in summer...regular watering, bright shade. In November I move it into a root cellar where it is pitch black and can drop to 3 C. There it stays until early April when I bring it back into a sunny window inside. I cut all the old leaves off as the new growths start to appear. It blooms in about 6 weeks. I will keep it indoors until mid-late June when all risk of frost has past. Calanthe bicolor is about to bloom for the first time and gets the same treatment.
For several years I simply put the plant in a cool room for the winter but it never bloomed. Not until it started getting 4-5 months of temps just above freezing did it start to bloom.
