Cattleya gaskelliana var concolor ‘Ananconda’

I bought this years ago from the US. It’s a tall plant with large open recurved flowers but is important as it’s originally collected moons ago. Lightly fragrant with NS of 17 cm. Flowered by David.

Lovely flowers, Leslie. What I'm wondering about is....one flower has an upright dorsal and the other ones a bended one. Do you have any explanaitions ?

The erect dorsal was on a younger flower.

I never found gaskellianas to have strong scent like the jenmaniis.

I have noticed in the past that cattleya can be influenced by either facing or having the back of the flower to the light source. This can influence reflexing and recurving segments, but it is not in stone and can vary with other conditions, perhaps temperature and humidity also play a part.

They say this is true for Paphiopedilum dorsal that grows towards the light. I have not seen this happen with cattleyas, but I’m curious to investigate.

Phrags. don't do this kind of reflexing due to orientation to light, but the whole plant occasionally leans and has
to be turned on a regular basis.
