Rick's Trillium thread reminded me of photos I took on my field trip with my 7th graders the other day to see nearby rich northern hardwood and white cedar cliff ecosystems. We observed and identified over 30 plants, most in flower. Our white trillium was not to be seen yet, but the red trillium put on a grand show!

Select photos from our botanical survey.
Trillium erectum, Dicentra cucullaria, Hepatica acutiloba

Sanguinaria canadensis (my personal fav), Erythronium americanum (and pollinator!), Asarum canadense

Wildflower Sentinel, he was screaming at us the whole time.

This chickadee knew she would find good eats under the lichen.

Those red trillium are awesome. I've never seen that species down here.

We were growing blood root and shooting star in our yard, but the last couple years of drought took them out. There's probably some good stands at the bottom of the hollows, so I need to get more hiking in myself.

Nice! I have Erythronium americanum, bloodroot (the double variety) and white Trillium in full bloom right now. The red trilliums are just starting to open, and my yellow trilliums will bloom a few days after that. Cyps kentuckiense, parviflorum, and pubescens are all coming up but too soon to see if they have buds.Lilacs are just starting too open, and lots of buds on my red horsechestnuts...Deciduous azaleas are just beginning to enlarge the buds....should be a good season, unless the heat keeps up. Take care, Eric
