I have been lurking the forum for some time. I think its about time to introduce
myself. A newbie orchid grower who loves Vanda so thats what i am primarily
growing. Starting growing orchids Feb, of this year.

Anyways I was introduced to Paphiopedilum a while back (may) and now I'm hooked.
Naturally, I managed to kill my first one, Paph. ciliolare and my second one
Paph. urbanianum, but at least I learned something, they dont like having wet
media (peat and perlite), and too much sun... (Cattleya level).

Now, I have a few:
2 x Paphiopedilum philippinense
1 Paphiopedilum fowlei
3 x Paphiopedilum ciliolare
1 x Paphiopedilum urbanianum
1 x Paphiopedilum hybrid (forgot the name, citron alien something)
1 x Paphiopedilum noid (maudiae)
1 x Paphiopedilum godefroyea

I really find it difficult to adjust from growing Vandas to growing Paphs and Phals
as the requirements are way diffirent.

So far so good, no deaths, except for the hybrid which suddenly decides it
wants to die, so most of its growth died, but i was able to save 1, and now
it has a new growth of its own. I think my change in media has something
to do with my success so far, now im using a mix of LECA,Coarse Charcoal,
perlite and diatomite. And also i have moved them to a shadier area, Phalaenopsis
level light maybe even less, except for the philippinense which i still keep at
Cattleya level.

I haven't managed to get any of them to bloom yet, but at least no death so
thats good news to me, the Paph Noid i got in bud but it blasted, im guessing
sudden changed in humidity.

Oh i really enjoy reading the posts here, they are entertaining and educational.
thanks

Welcome from Luxembourg!!!! I have quite some vandas and lots of other genera, but started to really reconvert to slippers a few years ago; now the number of slippers is growing fast :) ! Jean

Thanks for the welcome, well my growspace is getting smaller so i need to
branch out to other genera, those more compact growers. And I love paphs
as they always demand attention, just look at their blooms.

:clap::clap:WELCOME to the forum!
Hopefully members in your area will comment, it's hard for us in the states to recommend what will work for you due to climate differences & potting materials available. The barbata group can present a bit more of a challenge due to the thinner leaves resulting in the need for higher humidity but that may not be a problem for you!
Good luck!

Hello and welcome to the forum!!! Nice paph collection you have there!!! Good luck!! I would love to see some pics of your plants if possible!!! TY

thanks for the warm welcome guys. Humidity is not an issue when growing
outdoors, however, indoors is another story. I am experimenting on how to
increase my humidity, so far i've placed them together closely and among my
phals in s/h. I will see if i can post group photos of my paphs tomorrow.

thanks

Yes, im growing them outdoors in full sun, well of them anyways. Those strap
leaf are under shade where they can get partial sun.

Hi Delphiguy. Welcome to the forum. My first Paph. was also ciliolare. I bought it during one of the POS (Phil. Orchid Society) show in Greenhills in the early'90's. I was able to bloom it the following year. I was also able to acquire other Paph species from the Phil. after a few months. Unfortunately, I have to come here to Chicago and leave my plants behind...sad. Now I have quite a few Paphs. at home, mostly species though. Goodluck to you!!!

thanks for the welcome vandaalex. I've got a few paphs now since my
ciliolare days. I am still waiting for the day when my paphs would bloom under
my care.

Maligaynag pag sali sa isa sa pinaka magaling na paphiopedilum blog site sa mundong ito. Nagagalak ako na may isa pang taga Pilipinas na sumali sa grupo naito. Mabuhay mula sa Reno Nevada!

I'm pretty sure this day will come - but patience is one of the most important properties of a Paphs grower.

Thanks for welcome.
Thats the first thing i've learned with growing orchids. Anyways I dont
think i'll see any blooms from them anytime soon. So for the meantime I'll
enjoy their foliage hehe.

Maraming salamat sa mainit na pagtangap. Mabuhay ka at ang grupong ito.

Did I meet you there at the POS show? I was one of the members who set up that show in Greenhills. I was with the group of Kelvin, Jun, Tony, Fred and Vangie.

are you talking to me here? well the only POS show that i was able to attend
to was the one last aug-sep at the QC hall. Anyways, if we're thinking of the
same Jun then I know him, actually he got me started with Paphs.

Sorry, I was talking to vandaalex. If you are talking about Jun Golamco, then you are right. I taken some of the picture he is using in his lectures and in his book.
