Hi! I need help for translation...

I am writing a paper about American Beech (Fagus grandifolia) and I would like to write a few sentences about the wood appearance of the tree.

Here is what I've found in a lumber database:

Comments: American Beech is sometimes underrated and under-appreciated: which may be due to its somewhat bland appearance.

My problem is about the word 'bland'. I just don't understand what it means when we are talking about the apperance of wood!!!

Thanks for you help!

Boring or unappealing. Basically it does not stand out against the others that surround it.

Desirable wood often has prominent training or a rich colour. So bland refers to this. Personally I quite like the picture in the link; it reminds me of birch but darker.

Bland is normally used to describe a taste, or someone's personality, not the appearance of a physical object. However, when used in this context, I think it means "washed out or pale colour and weak or no distinctive markings".

Apparently, the photo is lumber, not the tree. Whomever used the word
"bland" is an idiot and pay it no mind. The American Beech is a magnificent
tree with edible nuts that are really quite tasty.
