Hi guys,

I have two of these plants (divisions) and most of the flowers are high quality. A plant worth getting hold of........

Very nice and cheerful blooms! Great color and shape! Is this one of the warm tolerant Masdevallias,I hope??

Wow.. Your area must be pretty cold to grow masdies.

I've been growing masdevallias and draculas for many years now and I don't find them as difficult as so many people seem to think. My plants lived through summer heats of 30+C for weeks without showing severe signs of stress. All I did then was to spray the plants a couple of time during the hottest part of the day. Even the coccineas kept on flowering. Most species and hybrids will also tolerate near freezing temperatures as well and I had one last spring that flowered for the first time in 8 years in a pot full of snow. They're tough and I think they ''learn'' to adapt to your conditions in time, as long as people don't try to grow them in constant tropical heat. There are exceptions of course. Some will die no matter what the temperature is. :)

Scrumptious color! I would like to have one of those.

Michel - how did your masdie end up in a pot of snow????

After trying everything and waiting so long for it to flower, I decided to get tough and leave it outside when temps got colder and it snowed in spring. The sticker said Masd. ignea. This brutal (I admit) treatment worked though and the plant sent a couple of spikes. It was not an ignea but some hybrid flower not that interesting. I've not decided yet if I should trash it.

I leave it outside up to around 32C or 90F, once it gets past about this temp (sometimes I forget) I bring them inside my home and put them in the bathroom until the hot days pass. In winter the temps are between 2C and 16C and in summer between 15C and 45C........

It's also surprising how little humidity it takes.

I agree with you, they are adaptable as long as you don't keep them hot all the time.
