Cymbidium goeringii Kourin 日本春蘭「光琳」A quick mid summer check. I noticed that one of the new growths is coming out from a very old pseudobulb (at least 5 years old). This plant came half dead 3 years ago. When they are well grown and happy, they grow at a steady speed every year, including new growth(s) from backbulb(s). This is one way to propagate your Cymbidium goeringii quickly and divide and sell.

why do you pot them so deep?

When potted correctly, the newest pseudobulb should be 1/3 to 1/2 burried. The new growths just start deeper every year (potted 2.5 years ago, so need to be repotted next spring) so that's why it's deep. If the whole pseudobulb is 100% exposed sitting on top of the potting mix (like you would pot any orchid with a pseudobulb), the plant loses too much moisture, will never bloom. That's the explanation in one of the Japanese Cymbidium books with illustrations on how to pot it correctly.
