Hello from Phoenix, Arizona,
I have been growing orchids for about 11 years in Charleston, SC where I grew all my orchids outside for most of the year. The climate is almost perfect for growing orchids there. I only grew the most common species, like Phals. Den. Cattleya and so on, however I never got around to growing Pahpiopedilum orchids because I was to busy breeding, crossbreeding, flasking and growing the seedlings of my favorite orchids.
I moved to Arizona about 2 years ago because of health reasons, the climate here is always hot & dry in summer and cold & dry in winter, 0-20 % humidity and maybe 50 % a few days out of the year, but I can breath much better. Luckily I left all my orchids with my best friend back in SC because they all would be dead by now. I found out the hard way that it is not easy to grow orchids in Arizona. I just purchased 5 new Paphs each growing different flowers and I started having problems the first week with leafs yellowing and falling off, so I am looking for help, suggestions and possible solution to the problem. Thank you and have a happy day everybody

Not sure if we have other forum members from AZ who can help, but i would think an indoor Wardian Case with climate-controlled temp and humidity/airflow would be a good way to grow Paphs.

A version of this could be a lightstand sectioned off with clear plastic and a humidifier inside.

And welcome!!!

Thanks for the welcome and info.
I experimented for months trying to figure out airflow, relative humidity, lighting and nigh-day time temperatures until I finally got it right. I built a mini greenhouse in my kitchen and finished it completely 3 days ago. The kitchen was the only place to build it since I live in a small apartment now, it has a west window with AC unit under the window and all works like a real greenhouse now. Now I am just waiting to see if the Paphs will recover after a month of suffering. Thanks for your kind reply!

Welcome to Slippertalk, Joe!

It may be difficult, but not impossible to grow orchids in Arizona. In fact, there are several orchid societies in your state. Here's a link from the American Orchid Society: http://info.aos.org/AFinfo.aspx
If that doesn't work, go to AOS.org and click on the Affiliated Societies Button. You should be able to select Arizona and see the societies that way.

Welcome from NYC. Did you know the Nortons (Orchidview) in SC? Humidity will be a big factor in Az. For photos you should use a 2nd party sharing site like FLKR or photobucket and post the links here.

Hello, thanks for the welcome! I have heard of Nortons but never knew them. I'm not familiar with 2nd party or FLKR, seems like everybody has their own system, so I'm still stuck. Usually I just have to click the insert photo or image and it goes to my documents and then I can use my pictures. Sorry for being computer illiterate! I would appreciate it if you explain. Thanks and have a good evening

Thanks for the welcome! I have checked them out, but didn't help much, thanks anyway. I just finished building a mini greenhouse in my Kitchen 3 days ago and it works like the real thing, I'm just waiting now to see if my 5 Paphs will recover, that is if they do. I also have 25 other orchids which I started collecting 4 months ago, they are all happy now. Thanks
