Here is another of the plants I received about 15 years ago from a defunct orchid vendor (Spencer M Howard). It was a do-nothing plant until I moved it to a sphagnum mix 3 years ago. I've never seen barbigerum in person but this seems darker than the other images posted here. I gather it's a highly variable species.

Very nice! Could that possibly be coccineum? Spencer Howard was not the most accurate on plant names. I once bought a "P. Leanum" from him. When I wrote to him that Leanum doesn't have tesselated leaves, he replied that it had been "authenticated by Dr. Fowlie". It bloomed out to be callosum sublaeve.

That's been suggested by another poster on the "other" slipper site. I guess it depends on whether you're a splitter or a lumper (species vs. varieties, respectively). I have two others from him labeled "barbigerum". One of those is about to bloom and is 4 times the size of this and the other is still struggling and is 1/2 the size of this plant.

:clap: Your highly variable can have space on my bench!:drool:

Very nice! Love the color on this one too! Mine are still in low bud and these pics are making me impatient!

Yes, it looks very much like the varity "coccineum" (or species) to me as well Eric. Nice one. Tell me more about this mix you have it in, please.

Thanks.

I have it in long-fiber NZ sphagnum and perlite in a 4 inch clay pot. It's been there for 3 years without repotting. I'm afraid to repot it since it's finally been growing for me.
