Yes, indeed; there's some dispute whether it's a separate species or Paph. appletonianum var. hainanese.

Is that the difference? How is the staminode different?

I think I read somewhere that appletonianum (also?) had longer stems and lighter color.

that is true too....apples stamis are generally narrow and roundish, very vertical and long toothed not triangle and short.

Is there a dispute over this? I don't think any Paph taxonomist recognises hainanese as a separate species. Braems did have it as a variety of appletonianum while the others don't even recognise this. I stand corrected if I am wrong. To me it just looks like a superior form of appletonianum. I think the distinction is more horticultural than taxonomic.
