Alot of discussion on growing paphs this way, but the question I wish to ask is, What size s/h is being used?

I have small and medium hydro pellets and am unsure as to the proper size - or most appropriate size to use.

Thanks!

We use lava pebbles mostly, and they only come in one size- about 1/2" diameter average. Also use HygroStone which is about 1/4" and smaller.

While other sizes are available, 8-16mm or 10-16mm is the most commonly-used fraction. I also have 4-10mm, but recommend that only for plants with hair-like roots, such as herbs or gesneriads.

if one puts very small seedlings into s/h (or is this not advised?), should one use the same size pellets as would be for the adult or near adult plants?

I have gone from flask-to-s/h using both grades, and saw no significant differences, so ended up going with coarse all of the time.

This, by the way, is Paph Erika Potent (urbanianum, x hookerae) that was in a 2.5" pot and moved to a 4.5" S/H pot about 18 months ago:
