I love the sturdiness of the spike!

I must say that malipoense makes some nice crosses, though much of the beauty of platyphyllum's petals is lost in this one. Still, a nice flower IMO.

A bit unrelated, but can anyone elucidate the difference between stonei and platyphyllum - they seem nearly identical.

Very nice Peter. Kyushu- IMO, platyphyllum plants have wider leaves and maybe a bit thinner then stoneis. That's why it use to be call stonei v latifolium. From what I can tell, the platy flowers have longer but paler petals as well as, paler colored pouchs. P platyphyllum has a "kolopakingii look" to it. At one time it was thought that it was possible a hybrid between the two, stonei X kolopakingii.

 I think we need a history lesson thread!
Does anyone else feel like a newcomer?

Yes, me too! For one thing, I've always wondered why it was called Paph. platyphyllum instead of Paph latifolium. Was that name already taken or somehow deemed unusable?

Is there a real wild population of platyphyllum? I was under the impression that "latifolium" was just a single clone (Ruth Kennedy). I've always wondered about new species being named after what appear to be a limited number of variants of another species...like platyphyllum and viniferum......Eric
