godefroyae v. leucochilum ‘Chosen’ x malipoense ‘Jack’ -- from Fox Valley

Not quite as good a blooming as last time, but the potential is there.

for a jackii hybrid, that is very good. I like the wide pointed petals that are not too twisted
...the orchid register shouldn't call this Mint Chocolate if jackii is its own species

Hi Dot, the staminode of the flower and shape of the petals says "I was made with jackii". P. malipoense will give a blotch of purple at the staminode tip, usually fairly bright, but rarely reduced to just lines. P. jackii almost always gives its offspring a spider pattern of lines on the staminode. You could ask Tom, the clonal name of the malipoense suggests that the name was changed to avoid issues. If you reduce Paph jackii to a variety of Paph malipoense then there are no CITES issues. If you list it as a separate species, then it is a species requiring a document trail.

WOW!!!!! I have one that is so slow in growing I will be dead by the time it flowers. It is tiny even after years.

Flowers like yours are a dream!!!

Thanks Leo. I feel so ... naive. But I like being educated.

Thanks, everyone.

I'd buy it just for the name! (If I thought I had a chance of blooming it!:()

I think I remember a thread a while back that Dr. Orchid made and named this cross. Is that right? Maybe it was originally made with malipoense, but this particular plant was made with jackii??

I can't imagine many reasons why to prefer var. jackii in a cross over straight malipoense, but the result here is really nice.
