I got this plant from Michel Paul a year ago during my last visit in Aalsmeer as paph Oliviae! I mailed Michel to get the parentage, and he wrote me it were niveum X tonsum => Olivia !! Having looked at the rare pics I found on the Web, I am very curious to see the bloom: in a few days :):):

Nice one Jean! I agree, it is not a hybrid you see very often (hmmmmm maybe I should remake it...). We have one plant of Paph. Olivia, so here is a picture for comparison:

What I like most about this hybrid, is how long the flowers last. On our plant they lasted 4 to 5 months! Let me know how long yours will last.

I used to have an Olivia....a division of the original cross. It lived for many years, maybe 15, but only bloomed once during that time...but, oh! was it gorgeous! Lasted a long time to...then faded away...also divided it to much and gave away too many divisions.....Take care, Eric

Robert, would you consider breeding with this type of cross given the long lived flowers? If yes, what direction would you take? Are these types of crosses difficult to breed with?

Yes, please do. I would love to have an Olivia in my collection again. My very first orchid was a gift from a colleague. It was a division of the original Paph. Olivia. I was new to orchids and didn't care for it properly and I lost it. :(

Yes, actually I did try breeding with it once, just because of the long lived flowers, but unfortunately to no success, but if it blooms again I will try it again. At the time I crossed it onto parvi's (I think at the time I was thinking to increase the longevity of the parvi type flowers), but if I would make new crosses, I would either go back to a brachy, or maybe a maudiae type cross; If you would cross it to a vini-colored maudiae type you may get some nice pink shades with flowers that will be long lasting.

Nice Olivia Jean !!
Olivia is a timeless cross and I possessed one when I started orchids growing many years ago in the last millenium !!! :( :(

Best regards from Germany, rudolf
