I acquired this one growth division at the end of '07. It's a good grower that is now 4 mature growths with a start. I hope you enjoy the pic.

Nice! I like my Orchilla 'Chilton', well, maybe because I don't have a Startler 'Clace'?

Very nice flower, is it flowering in season for you ??. Reason I ask is that the flower is very light on for color for Startler 'Glace'.

I haven't had the plant very long, so I'm not sure I know what normal is. It was in bloom in December when I bought it, so this might be a little early.

IMHO -This is one of the finest of the complex reds. The color looks about right to me, Roy; I think the lighter area at the bottom half of the right petal (as viewed) is actually color break - a problem to which this clone is especially prone. Here's a photo of our division for comparison.

Thanks,

Tom

Mine seems to have much more green in the lower part of the petals on this blooming. I'll look and see if I have a picture from a previous bloom.

Tom, I agree with your color comments fully. I just put both pics, yours & GaryB side by side. Yours is as I know Startler for flower formation, GaryBs flower actually has better segment formation and petal width. The Dorsal on your flower has the characteristic pinched point at the top, GaryBs doesn't, its very round and slightly cupped. I know paphs flower differently at different times but GaryBs flower is better than Startler ever will. I'm thinking its a Startler hybrid and a darn good one at that.

Mine came from a seller who was known by Hadley Cash as the person who purchased it from him. I'll check, but I am pretty sure than the label was in Hadley's handwriting (I have several other divisions from him).

I will also post a picture of the entire plant; maybe that will help confirm (or further cloud) it's identity.

Hadley took a look at the posted photo and confirmed that it is Startler 'Glace', although it is much lighter than how he usually blooms it, possibly due to warmer temps or brighter light. In his experience with complex paphs, form can vary widely, from great to hideous, from one bloom to the next and should not be used alone in identifying a plant.

So, I think I'll try a little lower light and see what happens the next time.
