Hello Carsten,

You saw paphiopedlium x yingiangense at EOC ?

Carsten, thanks a lot for these nice shots.
I also visited the show in Dresden and I was overwhelmed by the number of displayed orchids in general and of Paphs in particular. There were plenty of 'eye catchers' and all in all - to see this show was a really feast for the eyes. Unfortunately I didn't take photos (to be honest I was too lazy :D) but fortunately there are always guys we can rely on.

Best regards from Germany, rudolf

wow.. thanks a lot for re-confirming what Carsten's photo had already shown :) I was a bit dissapointed, first because I could notgo, and second because I had read in a german forum that EOC had not been good (I could not believe I was reading that)

Ramon, there was a great discrepancy between the quality of the orchid show and the number of visitors. This orchid show would have deserved a much higher number of visitors and not only few thousands.
There are some reasons responsible for that situation - at least in my eyes - but the main reason seems to be the lack of public promotion. You can't fill these halls just with these few orchid enthusiast even when they arrive from all over Europe.

I have to second what Rudolf wrote about the EOC. I believe the attention of the orchid addicts wasn't bad. One vendor commented he was quite happy with the Thursday morning, right after the gates opened and the orchid club members ran in by the bus load and raided the sales booths. But then, the normal, walk-in visitor was completely missing. Apart from the fact that there was propably little advertising in the city, there had been an orchid show in dresden in spring already, plus these shows always do better in spring than in autumn.
About the show: I liked it, it was huge with roughly 70 exhibits and there was plenty of stuff to look at, some you usually don't get to see cos it always blooms out of show season.
But, there weren't many excellent outstanding specimen plants (show stoppers) and most exhibitors had to fill gaps in their displays with mass market orchids more than usual. Has to do with the season, of course, not many flowering plants in the GH, but also with the fact that more and more people are reluctant to provide outstanding, valuable plants for shows.
Another reason may have been that the vendors fees decreased with increased display size they booked... You book a large display and pay a lot less as a vendor. Well, the show plants'll get a lot more space between them, but who cares.

This is part of the main exhibition hall, photo taken on Thursday before the gates opened, but there was always plenty of space to take pics...

Still, it was a good show and I enjoyed it a lot.

Hi All,

I was in Dresden to the show and I could only follow what it was said : nice things very large place not crowdy (perfect to take his time to see watch and take pictures. A lot of orchids nursery from everywhere. It was a nice show. I hope to see the Spring show next year.

For outstanding orchids and especieally paphs ; you are right : to bring valulable plants to a show with risks to lose, to be robbed, or damage is an issue for nurseries.

I remember to have seen better show stoppers in the past.

I hope to post a lot of pics this week end.
