What was the min/max temperature during this buds developing and opening. That is a pretty dark orange color and I just wondered if things were on the cool side at least for this flower? Have you noticed a difference in this plant's blooms depending on temperature?

Very nice shape on that flower. I have a big one that has good color, but the petals twist out of plane. I grew several flasks of them, but didn't have any that were shaped as nicely as yours. Mike

You are correct Terry. Temps were on the low side. 50 degrees was the bare min with the highs barely breaking 70. I did see a big difference in quality of each flower. The original order was received in Aug with all plants (4 D Wimber) in spike from Hawaii. The first flowers were pale, cuppy and small. I sold two the other two came home, this is one. I should also mention the flowers were also short lived. The second plant aborted the spike for growth. This one keeped the spike but also grew. The last two flowers before this one were large and beautifully colored BUT only had a pouch and the dorsal sepal! I suspect the plants will acclimate to this Texas weather and bloom normal during the winter months after this.

Unfortunate Mike. Maybe you can pickup a plant or two from Quintal Farms. That's were these came from. Watch for the "QF" on the tags.

It is often surprising how much the color, size, and shape of blooms can be affected by the overall growth of a plant, as well as the specific conditions of light and temperature during the bloom development. I can make an AM/FCC plant look worse than ordinary. I know my focus should be on optimizing all of my growing conditions more than chasing the genetics and awards. However, it is hard to turn away from an awarded plant or a great new hybrid!

Yes back in the day, I can remember Ray Rands making the agrument in his ads, "You had just as much of a chance getting a high quality plant from his primary unamed clones as someone else's awarded specie primary crosses". I didn't buy into it either. I was always drawn to the named clones and even better if they carried awards.
