This is a new primary: Phrag. Pandora's Box.

I will first let people guess what the parents are:

Look like a straight warcewiczianum (wallisii) for me....

warscewiczianum (aka wallisii) is one of the parents, but what is the other??

btw, I made the cross to prove a point, so maybe this will be a hint....

Good! lindenii x warcewiczianum

:clap::clap::clap: you got it!

I made the cross, because in my mind lindenii and warscewiczianum (wallisii) are just forms or varieties of the same species. As a geneticist and a Plant Breeder I was curious to see what the outcome would be if you would cross the two together. In my paper (published in the Slipper Orchid Alliance Newsletter) I suggest to call them:

Phrag. lindenii var. lindenii and:
Phrag. lindenii var. wallisii

lindenii gets priority as it was described first. Also if you do it this way you don't have to deal with the warzcewiczii/warscewiczianum confusion, and the second entity (with the pouch) gets its name wallisii back (and this is the name it has had for over 100 years). Also for hybrid registration these two entities can be considered as separate entities.

my hypothesis was that the pouchless trait of lindenii is caused by one or multiple genes that are probably recessive, and if you cross it on to wallisii, the plants will gain back their pouches and look identical to wallisii. Now if I would self one of these wallisii x lindenii plants, I am guessing you may end up with some plants that will loose their pouch and look like lindenii again.

Here is a picture of Phrag. lindenii var lindenii:

By the way I named the cross Phrag. Pandora's Box, because I felt like I was opening up a "can of worms" and probalbly would create some confusion, as you won't be able to tell this hybrid apart from its parent wallisii.

Very interesting! And a real good name! I like it!

Yes the new litterature consider them as the same species...
And the pouchless trait is recessive but lindenii was not use that much in the past and we had to make the experimentation...

I was told than lindenii crosses was giving larger pouch when the trait was coming back... I did made few crosses with it to see it's influence. I did not see that influence, and nether here in your cross...

We are on the same wave-length, Jean-Pierre!

And I like your reasoning on this, Robert.

I love this flower -- it is really lovely. Do you have these for sale? I don't have a wallisii, by that name or any other.

Very interesting, Robert. Thanks for doing this cross. I really enjoy all this 'genetic stuff'. lindenii is one of my favourites and I've wondered what would happen in crosses, as there don't appear to be many around. I would love to see what happens when you self it! How long are the petals, btw?

Aside from all of that, I do have a concern, and one that is shared with others as I have read on this forum, that crosses like this that look so similar to a species, can make documentation of specimens very difficult, and cause confusion in awarding plants, etc. Any comments on that?

I really like it and the story / reasoning behind making this hybrid only adds to it's coolness! :D
