You didn't get yours from me by any chance, Dot? I'm missing mine...

Looks nice. Eron and I are both wondering where we can find a picture of my awarded St. Eligius (pretty sure I named it, as well, but lord only knows where the photo went). It being missing, presumed dead, we may never know.

Two spikes, nice growing. Very symmetrical. I like it.

This Phrag. just has to be my first Phrag! I hope it's not particularly
tricky to grow and bloom. Can you tell me how you grow it? Where I might
be able to get one? How about temps.? Oh my, I think I'm getting carried
away. I love everything about it.

Yay besseae hybrids! You can't get them anymore; unless someone gives you a division or they are remade. Dot and I got ours when Orchidbabies sold out their stock. They are not the easiest Phrag to grow but Eron seems to be doing very well.

That might be awardable Eron. Will you have a chance to take it in?

Not unless you can meet me at the airport in the morning so you can take it to your center tomorrow;)

Our judging isn't until next Saturday, so it will almost be two weeks old then. Maybe before it's blooming cycle is done, it'll put out an unblemished bloom at just the right time for judging:)

Thank you all for your comments!

Angela, as Eric stated, it's probably not the easiest to grow however this particular plant has grown well for me. I also got it last winter as OrchidBabies was going out of business, so I don't believe there are any other seedlings available on the market.
If you like the looks of this one, another phragmipedium that is very similar to this cross is Phrag. Hanne Popow. Both crosses have the exact two species in their lineage, with Hanne Popow having just a little more besseae than the St. Eligius. But the colors and form will be very similar, and the Hanne Popows will also be a little larger. Just know that my Hanne Popows seem to be more difficult/slower for me to grow than this St. Eligius. I know Tom(Fox Valley) has some Hanne Popows on his website that should bloom within 12 months for a really good price if you would like to try one:)

I have it potted in the same mix as on my Phrag. Acker's Starlight thread and it just grows with all my other phrags. Nothing special. My greenhouse temps this year did not get warmer than 86 degrees so I'm not sure of it's upper temp. limit. But both parents are intermediate growers so the cooler the better. My winter low temps get down to around 53-55 degrees. So just jump right in and get your first phrag!

Thank you, Eron, for the information. A day late and a dollar short as
usual. My winter temps. very rarely go lower than 60F so I'm really not
sure I should try killing one...yet. Your plant is certainly a beauty. If you
ever have a division you'd like to sell, I'll be on the planet a little while
longer...maybe.

I don't think you will have to worry about the temps as you are already growing a wide variety of paphs. Hybrid phrags will fit right in and this cross will exhibit some hybrid vigor. I was only giving the min and max temps that my greenhouse gets at different times during the year since I've had this plant. This hybrid phrag does not need low temps to grow and bloom and should tolerate day temps in the mid 90s. But because of the species parents involved(besseae & schlimii,) I would try to keep it below the mid 90s if possible. The cooler growing species phrags is where you have to really watch the temps, but even then, some will be more warmth tolerent. I have grown a Hanne Popow in my greenhouse in previous years when my summer temps got into the mid 90s, and they survived. Just expect it to pretty much stop growing when the daily temps are that hot. So as long as you don't cook or freeze the plant;), your temps should be fine. I wouldn't let that stop you from trying this plant if you can keep it in that range but in my experience, Hanne Popows are slow growing for me.

I just don't like the HP as much as your plant. HP is pretty, but it doesn't
make my heart go all fluttery. My gh temps. never get anywhere near 90
in summer. The highest I've noted is 85-86. I'm definitely going to buy
a Phrag. or two next spring. Deciding which one is the delightful problem.
