ecudorense 'Birchwood' x schlimii

I love this little guy.

Nice! Perhaps this is a dumb question, but why is it orange? Wouldn't the schlimii make it white or pink? It looks like a besseae hybrid. ecuadorense is not much different than pearcei, and that primary (Carol Kanzer) is pale pink to almost white.

ditto...not quite what I was expecting. Still lovely.

I don't know. Here's last year pic. This year's blooming is a little darker.

I compared my flower to Woodstream's photo (where I got it) and the interior of his pouch is ivory and the interior of my pouch is very yellow.

It's looks mostly pink to me too.

Anyway I emailed him asking if it was a possibility that it was Ecua-Bess.

There is a yellow band that runs down the center of the petals, and the interior of the pouch is yellow -- these all blend visually with the pinks and give the flower an orangish look.

I know I'm still new to Phrags, but the two pictures posted look very much like a besseae hybrid. Here's a link to the photo from Woodstream, which I think is the one that bcostello was referring to http://www.woodstreamorchids.com/phrtpink1.html Anyone notice a difference? The shape and colour are completely different. I've never seen a schlimii primary with flat petals, like the ones in this post. And, I don't think it's my monitor - every other picture on this forum has come out 'correct' for me.

Here's the response from Woodstream:

Hi Brenda,

It has been 8-9 years since we remade Ecua-bess, so a mixup is unlikely. I see similarities between this flower and Ecua-bess, but I would expect some similarity. Besseae and schlimii are very closely related and breed along similar lines. The yellow in the staminode is classic schlimii. See attached image. I would be comfortable keeping it as Tickled Pink. Did you grown the plant cool, as sometimes cool temperatures will give pinkish flowers a reddish tinge. Very nice flower for this cross.

I don't disagree with you.

Eric's suggestion is good.
