Phrag. Will Chantry (flavum) (klotzscheanum x besseae v. flavum)

Okay, so I'm probably jinxing it, but I'm going to start with bud pics. I assume flower photos will be coming along shortly.

This is a tiny phrag hybrid, the smallest I've seen so far. It's been a carefree grower, enjoying bright light, warm temperatures, and lots of water. Even though it's tiny, I keep it in my standard rockwool based mix, which is nice and chunky.

I don't generally like flavum besseae hybrids, since I don't like the pastel / washed out colors, but I was in the market for a Will Chantry and this opportunity presented itself, so I thought I might as well see if it's going to be something special. I purchased this from Tom at Fox Valley Orchids.

Seems like a larger than average plant for a Will Chantry (flavum). It will be interesting to see the flower.

Phrags tend to grow big in my conditions. It's not uncommon for me to get blooming sized plants of one size, and then by the next year, the new growths are significantly larger.

When I got the plant from you, the largest growth at the time had about a 10" leaf span, and the leaves were about 1/4" wide. This new growth that's in bloom is around 13" - 14", with leaves that max out at a little over 3/4". The flower spike is about 10" - 11" high at the moment.

The red bracts aren't surprising given the P. klotzscheanum parentage, even with the flavum besseae parentage. And worst case scenario, it turns out to be a regular non-flavum Will Chantry and I would have no concerns about that!

Also for those curious, just pulled the tag out. The cross is klotzscheanum 'Red Fox' x besseae flavum 'FVG' AM/AOS.

Still a few days away from opening as far as I can tell, but I would expect, if all goes well, to post some bloom photos by early next week.

Looks larger in the photo, but blooming at 13-14" ls sounds about right and it's definitely our breeding. Here's a photo of a recent blooming of Will Chantry made with a flavum besseae.

This thing still hasn't opened its bud, yet. I was hoping it would be in full bloom by the early part of this week. No biggie, I'm excited but patient. The bud does appear to be getting larger each day and pushing further out of the bract, which is good to see.

I suspect it won't be far off from the lovely flower in the photo that Tom posted. Perhaps if I'm lucky, it'll have a slightly more outspread petal stance. And after noticing that Tom's plant doesn't seem to have the red pigmented bracts, I'm curious to see if that might translate into more intense coloration (either red, yellow, or pink) in the flower itself.
