It says "This photo is currently unavailable". So, I guess there's a glitch somewhere that needs fixing.

BTW: When you write "pecarei", do you mean "pearcei"?

My question too, but pearcei is a separate species not confused with caricinum.

I guess we'll need to wait till the photos catch up:eek:

Until now I thought, caricinum is a syn. of pearcei, but now I learned, that they are differnt species. Thanks. Koopowitz writes, that ´Phrag. pearcei has longitudinal green veins in the dorsal sepal, that are distinct, whereas Phrag. caricinum has lines that are more diffuse. The upper margis of the staminode in Phrag. pearcei display longer, thicker, and have heavier brushes of hairs.´

Here the pics, I post them again

Your flower looks like pearcei.

I attached a link to a previous thread to show how caricinum and pearcei are different.

Caricinum has smaller flowers, and all of the spots in the pouch throat are red (not green). If you go to the second page of that link you can see that the veining of the dorsal sepal is also less distinct.

Hi,

That's a nice plant and a very nice flower. However in my opinion that is not a pearcei nor a caricinum. The plant in the photo makes me think of the plants from Ecuagenera that Olaf Gruss described in 2010 as Phrag. xmerinoi, according to Olaf an hybrid of Phrag. boissierianum var. reticulatum and Phrag. pearcei.
Did your plant come from Ecuagenera? If so, maybe Olaf can shine his light on the matter.

Rob.

B.T.W. I find the flowers of pearcei and caricinum very distinct. I have never understood the mix-ups. No offence indended to any one.

Very interesting.
The plant came from Orchids and More, Ismaning, (next Munich) but they sell plants from Ecuagenera too. I will make some more pics tomorrow, with more details!

It's beautiful....and I'd keep it if it were in my collection. I like the ruffled aspect to the petals. However, I agree completely with Rob. It looks like the natural hybrid of reticulatum and pearcei. Although, there's a lot of pearcei influence, it's definitely not pure pearcei.

Given our past discusion of pearcei species "swarms", with ad nauseum natural crosses and backcrosses is there really only one "true/pure" pearcei?

Also there is a lot of individual within plant/cultural variation in flower quality.

Over the years I've been posting multiple pics from a plant that even within one season some agree that its a pearcei, and next month its considered a hybrid.

It's beautiful whatever it is. I should start looking for smaller growing phrags instead of parvis to fill up the space in between my bigger ones.. is it a difficult plant to grow and flower ?

It's a nice enough flower but the pearcei concept doesn't hold up for me either. The horizonally held petals bugs me.

Not to mention the near ruffling of the petal margins, reduced fuzzy "eyebrows" on the upper margin of the staminode sheild and especially, the vestigial "horns" on either side of the pouch rim. Even the foliage indicates genetic contamination. It's too "heafty". It should be more "grass-like".
