This is the first blooming on this plant, which I bought from Paramount Orchids a few years ago. Only two blooms, I haven't been making big shows like some of our other members. The ovaries are very long on these species, so I staked and tied the two blooms together.

I am growing it in medium orchid bark, with those clear plastic pots with slits. I found it difficult to water it enough, so growth was slow. So now I set it into water, caudatum types don't rot if set in water for me but it was beneficial.

The petals are somewhere around 48-50cm today. I don't know when they stop growing.

It is long petal Phrag season!

Phragmipedium wallisii is officially called phrag warscewiczianum, but I doubt this name will be used much. So I use the old name to minimize confusion.

Some people think that all the caudatum types look too similar. And when you image google caudatum, you will find some mislabelled pictures. I do think wallsii is a valid species, because the pouch is different from caudatum. Wallsii have strong pouch ridges, flaring outwards, and a more slender pouch, and the color and markings is distinct.

Nice one Fren

First bloomings aren't big for me either with this species, but your plant is big and healthy looking. I also have good luck with mine in standing water.

Very nice Fren! I love the first photograph especially.

My first blooming of one of these guys (also from Paramount) was only a single bloom. But it lasted forever.

Mine isn't sitting in water, the only phrag I have that's not. Maybe I should re-think that...it's darn dry here.

Gorgous flowers. Good looking plant too. BTW: wallisii is a very slow grower compared to other caudatum types. It's just part of what to expect with this species.

Mine is in bloom, not having a good bloom this time & if my plant looked like that one, well .......
it might become a bess type real soon!

Lovely flowers Fren and nice photos especially the first one.
BTW how long are their petals??
When mine were in flower two months ago they started with a length of about 30 cm and ended by 50 cm!!
