While demonstration is acceptable & necessary sometimes, destroying other peoples' properties is totally unacceptable. I know it sounds terrible but, the shop owners should have guns to protect their own properties (this way there is no need to blame the police for being too soft or too hard). I am sure if you do this to someone's property in Texas.. you can see how big his/her gun barrel is... (that's what I heard, maybe it is just an Urban legend, not true fact)

It's pretty funny, but in the USA if a gang member is shot by the police it's business as usual!
"Like a bar fight, the best place to be in a riot is 'elsewhere'!"

The older I got , the more I avoid the crowd.
What comes to mind is the recent crush to death of the 6'5" 270 lb Walmart employee (he is not a small person by any standard) by the herd of discount seekers, it really is a shame

It is a shame but I have to wonder if WalMart brought this upon themselves. Our neighbor was at the Gurnee, IL. Walmart on black Fri. 4am when the doors opened. The good sales items were left on skids with plastic wrap around them. They made an announcement that the sales items couldn't be touched until they said so. There were employees keeping shoppers at bay. Well by 5am, with the store good & crowded, they gave the OK & all hell broke loose! There were no fatalities but there were injuries. I have to wonder if something like that resulted in the death in NY? Wasn't that a brilliant idea?

maybe these places need turnstiles or barriers so only one person at a time can get through; though I'm sure nobody would have every dreamed that people would be in such a rush to buy the cheap junk that walmart sells (JMHO)

You are absolutely right Rose, I believe Walmart deliberately cultivated a super-hyper image with an eager crowd to promote a lasting exposure on TV.
USA is not any remote corner of the earth. The first thing I learned & was exposured to in the US is a waiting line (very different to an elbow crowd in the old country) Walmart knows quite well how they could set up a waiting line with barrier, but they don't, purposedly.
But since then, we were reduced slowly to animal behaviour by these corporations.
This is peace time in a country of plenty, would we behave better than peoples in countries ravaged with wars & starvations.

hmmm, he was last here the night of the 6th, and the news reports say these things happened on the 7th (if I can read right).

here I thought greece was a peaceful place, but after reading that news link it definitely doesn't look so : (

It's hard to believe it's happening, there must be a lot of unhappiness there at the moment.

I imagine Greece as a beautiful country, plenty of sunshine & nice weather, gorgeous sea, healthy food, what is there to complain about.
I think among all creatures of the animal kingdom, humans are the only ones carry this trait of disatisfaction .

Well, only a few decades ago Greece was ruled by a military junta, so I imagine there are still a few growing pains. I don't think the situation there should be chalked up to dissatisfaction.

This isn't to say that I support destructive rioting, but I think it is a good thing for a government to have a healthy and respectful fear of its citizens and be accountable for its actions.

Well, hello all...

I just saw the thread today, so I am really sorry for being late to reply!!!!

Thank you all for your concern...:D:D:D

Well rioting happened all over the main cities of Greece, but mostly in Athens and Thessaloniki!!! Fortunatelly or unfortunatelly I could not get out because of a project I have to work on!! So I was for 2-3 days almost indoors! (Well, I did not work on the project all the time...:D and I just did not visited the centre of the city)

I am somehow fine with the rioting thing cause things in Greece get really awful: bad hospital care, very low payments, corruption of the upper class, no care for the environment etc (Fortunatelly there are few who are doing a great job and things do not collapse!!!) and I think that this kind of things sound an alert for our society! They are making a nudge for those "ruling", don't you think!!! What if buildings and material stuff are destroyed, they can be fixed... and again and again... No harm is done!!! But who is going to get interested in the situation of the average citizent???? And what about lost lives??? And police are too matso these days and are doing a lot of stupid things, so shouldn't there be a sign of discomfort/complaint?? Well it might have evolved to an exaggeration that I am not so in favour of, but it is sth...!!! Cause there is no other way to complaint! If i send a letter of complaint to the government, they will toss it in the bin! I am more than sure about it!!!! I think that there is a long way ahead of us in the short future...!!! Maybe this is nothing compared to what follows..! Who knows!!!???? If we would like to change our society to the better the whole system of values and ethics should change, so imagine how radical changes must happen...!!! And let's start from respect!!!!! (in due to which the recent rioting events should stop...)

And the basis of all that is education (I am not reffering to the gathering of information...which education is nowadays)

That is for now...!!! Thank you all...:D
